Here’s a saucy dinner party tidbit for you: less than 10 percent of people watch porn with the sound off. A staggering 91.5 percent of viewers prefer to watch X-rated content with the sound on, according to data shared with TNW by adult site xHamster. By contrast, only 8.5 percent consume porn with the volume muted. The chart below reflects sound preferences for both mobile and desktop users. While the trend is consistent across devices, desktop users click the mute button a bit more often than mobile users. Indeed, 89 percent of all desktop users watch porn with the sound…

Cloudflare acquired an old Sun Microsystems slogan and I’m feeling nostalgic

Sun Microsystem is a name seldom uttered in 2019. That’s a damned shame, because if it wasn’t for this hugely influential firm, the Internet would be a completely different place. Suffice to say, we owe it a tremendous debt. In addition to the Solaris operating system and the Java programming language, Sun Microsystems also fostered development of the MySQL database, which today powers a disproportionate swath of the Internet, including Facebook. Sun was also a pioneer of open source. In 2006, the European Union recognized the company as the largest global corporate contributor to open source, exceeding the next five…

Bitmain lost $150,000 because it mined an invalid Bitcoin block

Bitmain-owned mining pool Antpool appears to have squandered at least $150,000 worth of Bitcoin mining rewards, reports BitMEX Research, the analytic arm of cryptocurrency exchange BitMEX. At 14:35 UTC, June 10, the Bitcoin network rejected a block after it had been mined, which effectively cancelled the 12.5 BTC ($146,200) reward intended for its miner. Any resources spent mining the block were also essentially wasted. Bitcoin had an invalid block at height 584,802, as spotted by @juscamarena All 8 nodes at https://t.co/WKQ8hPDGON identified the block as invalid: Bitcoin Core 0.18.0Bitcoin Core 0.17.1Bitcoin Core 0.16.2Bitcoin Core 0.10.3bcoinBitcoin Knots 0.14.2btcdLibbitcoin pic.twitter.com/p5WKJ5rO0t — BitMEX Research…

CHEAP: You suck. Buy a FitBit Charge 3 for $120.

Welcome to CHEAP, our series about things that are good, but most of all, cheap. CHEAP! I’m sorry to be the one to tell you this, but you suck. I know, it’s hard to hear, but you do. You suck. I suck. Everyone sucks. One of the pleasant parts about technology though is we can use it to make us suck less (we can also use it to make us suck more, but that’s a story for another day). Anyway, one of the companies making products to help us suck less is FitBit. The business makes fitness trackers that allow…

Nike’s strong digital presence and tech advancements, like their smart shoe released last year, proves that they’re at the forefront of tech. As Michael Martin, Global Head of Digital Products said on the TNW Conference main stage last month, “Nike is now a technology company — full stop.” During his keynote in Amsterdam, Martin unveiled Nike Fit — a digital foot measuring tool to ensure that you’re buying the right sized shoe. According to Martin, wearing the correct fit can improve athletic performance and comfort. With an estimated 60 percent of the population wearing the wrong size, Martin says that…
