Bad news for the pornographers: Porn Time, the Popcorn Time clone for filth, launches on Android

It was bad news for the adult industry when Porn Time, the Popcorn Time clone dedicated to porn torrents, debuted recently. Now it’s made its way to Android.

Our policy on torrent apps is to not directly link to them, but you’ll be able to find the Porn Time Android app easily if you’re reading this.

Porn Time’s creators claim that 450,000 people downloaded the desktop version in one week. The US topped its chart with 14.99 percent of installs, followed closely by filthy French folk at 10.69 percent.  My home country, the UK, is down in a respectable 9th position.

The developers claim that the Android version will swiftly be followed by an iOS app, something the main Popcorn Time team managed pretty swiftly.

As I noted in my previous post, the porn industry is already dominated by the giant squid-like MindGeek which owns the majority of the free ‘tube’ sites.

The traffic for my previous post alone indicates there’s significant interest in Porn Time and that’s going to concern a lot of people – from those worried about the influence of porn on our society to those in the industry trying to make a living.

Easy access to free torrents on the desktop, Android and iOS is terrible news for the dwindling band of pornographers hoping you’ll pay.

DxO’s iPhone camera attachment promises DSLR quality shots in your pocket

DxO One, a new attachment for your iPhone, claims it’ll bring DSLR-quality photos to your smartphone and tablet.

The new gadget resembles those popular old Sony Handycams and attaches to the bottom of your iPhone or iPad via the Lightning port to add an extra higher-quality camera.

In the tiny 2.65-inch, 108-gram device, you’ll get a 1.8/f lens on a 1-inch, 20 megapixel sensor, as well as an onboard MicroSD slot. The company claims that this means it can capture high-resolution, good quality images even in low light.

The camera pairs with a free iPhone app that allows full manual control over the DxO hardware, including aperture, shutter speed and ISO, as well as 1080p video.

Images are saved in a new RAW format that the company touts as “SuperRAW” which is four RAW images captured and merged together when connected to a Mac or PC.

If you’re sold already by the allure of DSLR-quality shots — I love the idea of a pocketable, high-quality camera — the DxO ONE will set you back a solid $599 and comes with licenses for the DxO image processing software.

YouTube Newswire from Storyful and Google aims to weed out hoaxes

Storyful, the social media news agency, has teamed up with Google to launch YouTube Newswire. The feed will surface verified clips related to major news events, hopefully helping journalists to avoid hoaxes.

Storyful was acquired by News Corp in 2013 and has previously launched Facebook Newswire for surfacing newsworthy content from that social network and FB Techwire, dedicated to tech news.

In a post on Medium, Storyful founder and Director of Innovation Mark Little says the project has been in the works for five years:

Back in 2011, when Storyful began formally working with YouTube, 48 hours of video were uploaded on the platform every minute. Now it’s a 300 hour-per-minute deluge, some of which has the capacity to change the way we see the world. YouTube has profoundly altered and enhanced the way we document history.

The service has verified over 100,000 different videos on YouTube and has partnered with Google on other projects including CitizenTube and the Human Rights Channel.

Storyful has even managed to make Google+ useful with its Open Newsroom Group where a large number of journalists discuss clips and share techniques for discovering which are genuine and which should be discarded.

The company is also a YouTube partner, which means it can help people who capture a newsworthy incident to be rewarded for their footage.

Aine Kerr, Storyful’s Managing Editor, explains the aim of YouTube Newswire in the same Medium post:

…the problem we are trying to fix is the same we’ve been innovating against since 2010: Helping journalists find stories worth telling amid the noise of social.

Storyful has a really strong track record in separating the wheat from the chaff. The arrival of YouTube NewsWire is definitely welcome in an online world where journalists are still regularly bamboozled by fakers.

Google has also announced two other projects to improve online news verification – The First Draft Coalition, which brings together proven experts in the field to offer advice and resources, and The Witness Media Lab, focused on documenting human rights issues with citizen video.

Remember Ello? It has an iPhone app now

Remember Ello, the social network that everyone wanted an invite for, but ultimately ended up signing into once? It just got an iPhone app.

Yes, the attractively designed, ad-free service be accessed on your phone so you can post on the go, find new people to follow and get notifications about new interactions.

I hadn’t signed into Ello for a long time, but the iPhone app spurred me to at least try it again. It’s well designed, is easy to use and finally offers a way to access it where you’d actually want to: on the go.

Ello still seems fairly active, despite the initial buzz blowing over. Perhaps if it had launched with an iPhone app on day one it might have fared slightly better — I’m going to give it another shot by leaving it installed.

BillGuard offers new feature to protect against identity theft

BillGuard introduced a new feature today on its app to protect users from identity theft.

Identity theft is something that nobody wants to experience. Aside from the financial pain, it’s very stressful to resolve and can often cause issues for years following the incident.

The BillGuard update aims to make detection faster with credit monitoring, black market surveillance and a range of other features depending on the level you choose. There are three options – Free, Pro and Ultimate.

All three versions are available on iOS. The Android versions of BillGuard Pro and Ultimate will be available soon as well, according to the company.
