FCC mulls extending low-income subsidies for broadband Internet

As more and more people give up their landlines in favor of smartphones, the question of how low-income subsidies for phone service in the US are dispensed has come into play.

The Federal Communications Commission, in a 3-to-2 vote today, has given a green light to extending government’s Lifeline program for broadband Internet, in addition to basic phone service. The proposal comes from FCC chairman Tom Wheeler.

Bloomberg reported that the vote, along party lines with Democrats in favor, reasoned that poor people rely more on their phones for Internet access, and the lack of subsidies creates a disadvantage in their use of common services like banking and healthcare.

Not that the subsidies are that great to begin with. Lifeline recipients currently receive $9.25 a month for phone service, so it’s expected that the FCC would raise that amount to assist with broadband data plans.

The proposal is backed by CTIA, a wireless trade group whose members AT&T, Verizon and others, also stand to benefit.

Republicans on the panel, in opposition, voiced concerned about tracking down waste, fraud and abuse in the system.

Lifeline program spending plunged to $1.6 billion in 2014 from a peak of $2.2 billion in 2012, according to the Universal Service Administrative Co., a nonprofit that oversees the subsidies alongside the states. The number of Lifeline users dropped to 14.5 million in 2013 from 17.2 billion in the previous year, according to the 2014 FCC report.

Facebook Moments not coming to Europe because of privacy concerns

FacebookMoments

Earlier this week, Facebook launched Moments, a facial recognition app designed to make sharing photos easier. Available in the US, Facebook says it won’t be bringing it to Europe because of privacy concerns.

Richard Allan, Facebook’s head of policy in Europe, says “regulators have told us we have to offer an opt-in choice to people to do this. We don’t have an opt-in mechanism so it is turned off until we develop one.”

Allan told The Wall Street Journal there was no timetable for development of this opt-in feature, so Europe will go wanting for the Moments app indefinitely.

Get ready: Marvel comics now arriving on the Kindle store

marvelfeat

Comic book lovers rejoice! There’s now a new way to dig into your favorites, as Marvel single-issue comics have now landed on the Amazon Kindle Store.

More than 12,000 of Marvel’s single-issue digital comics are now available in the store, and on the Kindle platform worldwide, starting today.

The new treasure trove is a result of Amazon’s year-old acquisition of comiXology, the digital comic distributor that handled the Marvel brand, among other popular comics, for years.

The expanded distribution does not affect other platforms: single-issue comics will be available from comiXology, as usual. The company will also continue distribution of Marvel trades and graphic novels through apps on Fire tablets, iPhone, iPad, Android devices and the web. The Marvel Comics app for iPhone, iPad and Android devices are also available as before.

The cool thing about the new distribution deal is that Kindle users worldwide, who may not be comiXology app users, will now have Marvel comics promoted within the Kindle store — thus widening the reach and the fun.

Heinz QR code leads customer to porn, or why you should hold on to your domains

Hold on to your URLs even when you don’t think you need them any more; that’s the cautionary lesson Heinz recently learned when a QR code on its bottles recently redirected a German customer to a porn site instead of its own.

Heinz ran a promo in Germany from 2012 to 2014 allowing you to order a customized Ketchup bottle by scanning a QR code on the label. As Daniel Korell found out, however, that domain was seized up by a porn site called FunDorado.

Just to make sure it wasn’t some sort of mistake, Korell tried the code with several devices, and got the same result every time.

And as Grub Street points out, it’s not clear what’s worse: the domain being seized by a porn site, or it taking months before anyone actually scanned the QR code to discover there was a problem.

So Korell took to Heinz’ Facebook page to voice his complaints, pointing out Heinz can likely afford to hold onto a domain until well after a promotion ends – or at least until the bottles expire.

It worked out well for him in the end though – Heinz apologized and said it would send him a customizable bottle anyway, whereas FunDorado cheekily chimed in to offer Korell a free yearlong subscription to its site.

Vimeo has updated Cameo for iOS to make editing video simple, even when it’s 1080p

Vimeo has updated Cameo, the video recording and editing app it acquired last year. With version 2.0 for iOS, Vimeo is making video edits simpler as well as supporting higher quality shots.

Cameo users can now import video directly form their Camera Roll, and trim each clip with a few taps. Edited content can also be spliced together with a few swipes, and you can add text or a soundtrack — all from your iPhone.

The interface has also been simplified, and Cameo now supports 1080p video as well. Vimeo says videos render locally, so your edits happen quick, even when you’re offline.

You’re also free to edit and upload videos of any duration. Previously, Cameo limited users to 2 minute clips.

Once you’ve got an edited video you’re happy with, Cameo makes it easy to upload directly to your Vimeo account. If you’re happier sharing via SMS, Email or another social medium — that’s available as well.
