Facebook’s concept for mobile ads uses rich imagery and 360-degree views

At an advertising conference in Cannes, Facebook is showing off what it believes could be the next iteration of mobile advertising.

Rather than viewing static images, users would have the option to scroll through various pixel-dense pictures or GIFs. Facebook’s concept apparently makes use of 3D modeling for 360-degree views of an item as users drag a finger across the screen, too.

In addition to just plain looking better, these ads serve as a means to give brands a flashier presence on Facebook. Users don’t leave Facebook when they click on an image or video.

According to Re/Code, it’s still early days for the concept. Facebook is currently soliciting feedback from advertisers about their design, so don’t expect these types of rich ads to pop up on Facebook any time soon.

We definitely prefer the concept to static imagery and clumsy autoplay video, though.

Amazon, Ebay, Walmart and others are removing the Confederate flag from their stocks

Amazon

An onslaught of retailers – including Amazon, Ebay, Etsy and Walmart – are removing Confederate flags from their stocks in the wake of the racially-motivated Charleston church shooting that claimed nine victims on June 17.

Given the killer openly identified himself as a white supremacist – going so far as to pose with the flag in several photos before the shooting – a long standing debate emerged over the use of the Confederate flag in southern states.

In particular, the flag that currently flies over the South Carolina capitol has come under fire – although it takes a two-thirds legislative vote to be able to remove it.

So far, Amazon, Ebay, Etsy, Walmart, Target and Sears have announced they are removing all Confederate flags from their stocks. More will likely follow.

Supporters of the flag suggest the it’s a part of the South’s history – it’s often used as a commemorative symbol for the descendants of Confederate soldiers – but opponents say the flag is too tinged with racist associations.

South Carolina governor Nikki Haley has called for the removal of the flag in the state capitol, saying that “while [it is] an integral part of our past, does not represent the future of our great state.”

Virginia’s governor, meanwhile, announced the state will it will phase out license plates featuring the flag.

Of course, many are wondering why we had to wait until such a tragedy to occur before discussion reached such public levels, but if for any reason you want to get a Confederate flag, you’ll be having a much harder time doing so on the Web, and off it:

JUST IN: Valley Forge Flags, one of the top U.S. flag manufacturers, is ending production of confederate flags.

Though the Confederate flag is fresh in the public mind, the issue goes deeper.

There are other racially-insensitive items available through retailers, for instance; Swastika-patterned products can still be found through a quick search on Amazon. Still, hopefully the current debate can encourage retailers to be more selective about the items they stock.

A drone didn’t strike a Southwest Airlines plane leaving New York, a VFX designer faked it

Plane strike

A video was posted to Liveleak earlier today purporting to show a drone colliding with a Southwest Airlines flight leaving New York and shearing off the tip of its wing. It’s got lots of play on Twitter…but it never happened.

Check the wing closely and you’ll see this URL – www.branit.com – which doesn’t belong to an airline but to a visual effects designer in Kansas City called Bruce Branit.

He tells me he’s “not sure how this blew up like this” and is working on a Making Of video right now. He claims he didn’t post the video to Liveleak, but rather shared it on his company YouTube page. He’s now made it private.

Although this tweet suggests he might have had some notion of how things go viral…

Making something viral is like fishing. Gotta put something good on the hook. But still no guarantee you're going to catch anything.

iOS 9 beta 2 will prompt users to temporarily delete apps if they don’t have enough memory

iOS9TNW

If you were considering loading the new iOS 9 beta, but were unsure if your device had enough space — it may not matter. Some users are being prompted to temporarily remove apps ahead of loading the new operating system.

First reported by 9to5Mac, users on Twitter are noticing the option to delete apps ahead of loading iOS 9 beta 2. The option was likely included in iOS 9 all along, but version one of the beta wouldn’t have reflected this option.

After users update to iOS 9 beta 2, the apps are reloaded automatically. If your data is backed up, you can log back into the app and proceed as usual.

Though iOS 9 will be much more svelte than previous iterations of iOS, some devices with less memory could still have trouble.

Google Docs, Slides and Sheets now support TIFF images and non-RGB color profiles

GoogleLogoTNW

The Google Docs productivity suite now supports “less common” image formats like TIFF when converting documents from other services like Microsoft Office.

Additionally, Google says Docs can now embed large images when you’re converting documents, and will now recognize non-RGB color profiles, specifically those in the CMYK profile.

The changes come to the Google Docs editor on the Web, and are reflected in the Docs, Slides and Sheets utilities.
