Facebook’s News Feed now ranks videos based on your volume levels and HD preferences

Facebook_2.jpg
A little over a week ago, Facebook started refining its News Feed by ranking posts based not just on what you click, like, comment and share, but also by  how long you look at them. A week later, it did the same for video posts. And now, it’s adding more subtle measurements to gauge your interest in video. For example, Facebook will now take into account whether you’ve turned up the volume on your video, made it full screen or enabled HD playback. Those details will factor in on whether or not to show you similar videos. It’s just the…

Uber is set to complete an acquisition which will bring around 100 Microsoft Bing data collection engineers on board to help build Uber’s mapping network. The ridesharing network is also acquiring unnamed assets from Microsoft to help jumpstart its efforts. Microsoft and Uber have confirmed the deal to TechCrunch, but have not discussed the terms. Uber has been trying earnestly of late to build (or acquire) its own mapping features. The company recently acquired mapping software firm deCarta, and reportedly put in a hefty bid for Nokia’s HERE Maps. With this move, it seems Uber is simply starting from the ground-up and…

Here’s possibly the geekiest way to Rickroll someone

The Rickroll is still one of the Web’s purest troll moves. And now there’s an easy way to bring that Astley action to the terminal. London-based developer Radek Pazdera has outlined a way to display images in terminal that uses just nine lines of Ruby. Of course, you can use it for noble acts, like sharing a lovely picture of Pikachu, but deploying it for the dark arts is even better. Pazdera started by combining two gems – rmagick (to read the images) and tco (to map pixels from RGB to the extended terminal color palette.) The sample code He then extended the original code…

The OnePlus 2 is shaping up to be an interesting Android handset; after confirming we’d see a USB-C port, OnePlus now says its second generation smartphone will also have a fingerprint sensor that’s “faster than Touch ID”. OnePlus goes on to say the fingerprint sensor on the OnePlus 2 is “done right. It’s refined and lightning quick, unlocking your device faster than TouchID.” While OnePlus doesn’t talk specifics of the sensor’s software, the company does hint it will be central to your experience, not like previous handsets which used a sensor as “a selling point, not a useful feature.” OnePlus…

Twitteriffic for iOS now uses facial recognition to center friends in pictures

TwitterifficiOS
Twitteriffic for iOS has a few new tricks up its sleeve. The app will now take better advantage of Twitter’s cool new quote tweet feature, and use facial recognition software to help you frame your shots. When someone quotes your tweet, Twitteriffic will give you the option to see notifications on your iOS devices or Apple Watch. Just like you see with retweets, the pop-up notifications let you know you were quoted, and by whom. The facial recognition feature is designed to deal with sloppy snaps, making  people in an image the main focus. Twitteriffic also gains a useful gesture…
