Rdio has revealed its response to Apple Music and the buzz-heavy Beats 1. The streaming service has set up a series of new stations curated by record labels and influencers. It says its in-house music team has collaborated directly with the new curators to put together recommendations that represent the records that are exciting “local tastemakers.” The stations are available across Rdio’s plans – including free, unlimited and select – and are launching for the first time in Australia, Mexico, Brazil, India, and Asia (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia and Hong Kong). Additional stations have been added in the US,…

4-CODE-ON-ANY-DEVICE-BLUE
The BBC announced the BBC Micro:bit, a new pocket-sized computer inspired by the classic BBC Micro, back in March. Now it (along with a roll call of significant partners) has unveiled the final design and spilled some more details. The project is a collaboration between the broadcaster and partners including ARM, Barclays, element14, Freescale, Lancaster University, Microsoft, Nordic Semiconductor, Samsung and the Wellcome Trust. Every year 7 (6th grade) child in the UK will receive a BBC Micro:bit for free. That means up to 1 million devices will be distributed in the first batch. The device has 25 red LEDs…

Facebook tests floating videos, so you can scroll and watch at the same time

feat
A new button that’s quietly appeared on Facebook for some today allows video to be popped out from the newsfeed so you can keep watching as you scroll. Once pressed, the video continues playing and floats out of the way on the lower left of the screen. It can be dragged anywhere and directly liked or shared at any point. Unfortunately the video doesn’t stick around if you head to a different page. The feature pretty useful if you don’t want to just sit watching a longer video or just want to keep aimlessly browsing your feed. Facebook is pushing harder into YouTube’s…

Mozilla plans to rebuild Firefox’s interface using modern Web technology

firefox
Firefox has been around since 2002 and Mozilla is looking to rebuild fundamental parts of the browser for the first time. Mozilla’s Director of Engineering, Dave Camp, posted a message to the Mozilla mailing list saying that while Firefox is “built on Web technologies” the company could “do a much better job of capitalizing on it.” The browser’s interface as we know it today was built on top of Mozilla’s XML User Interface Language (XUL), which was invented to “fill the gaps” that HTML had at the time. According to Camp’s email, because XUL isn’t a Web technology it doesn’t get as much attention…

Hands-free Tinder uses your heartbeat to decide ‘hot or not’

TinderHeartBeat
Too listless to swipe on Tinder? Design agency T3 may have the answer. It has previewed Hands-Free Tinder which uses heart rate data from your Apple Watch or Android Wear device to decide whether you’re into a match or not. Effectively it’s the potential dating equivalent of those unreliable reality show lie detector tests. But still, you should follow your heart, right? The developers say the app is ‘coming soon’, but I suspect it’ll need to get a new name before it actually makes its way onto the App Store and Google Play. ➤ Hands-Free Tinder [T3 via FastCo Create] Read…
