Intel quietly admits that it’s struggling with Moore’s Law

Broadwell_Die_Horizontal
Is Moore’s Law finally faltering? Intel has confirmed today that its next generation of processors called “Kaby Lake” will be built using its existing 14-nanometer process. It was expected the company would shrink its processor size down to 10-nanometers next year after the release of the next-generation ‘Skylake’ chipset. Moore’s Law, an observation from co-founder of Intel in 1965, says that the number of transistors on a chip roughly doubles every two years. Intel’s CEO, Brian Krzanich, admitted on the company’s investor call yesterday that its first ‘Cannonlake’ product built at 10-nanometers has been delayed to 2017. Instead, the company will build a third set of processors on…

File this one under weird: Xiaomi, the creator of China’s most popular smartphones, is now making a water purifier. Announced today on the company’s Twitter account, the Mi Water Purifier is a high-end way to, well, clean your water. It’s designed to sit on top of your bench and attach to your existing tap so that you don’t need to modify your existing setup to use it, which is great if you don’t own your house. The filter uses reverse osmosis to offer what the company claims to be cleaner, tastier drinking water than competing water filters. Xiaomi’s water filter will cost $209 and be made available…

Qualcomm is being investigated by the EU over its chip pricing

The European Commission has opened not one, but two official investigations into whether Qualcomm attempted to force customers to use its chips by leveraging its dominant market position. Qualcomm is the world’s largest manufacturer of ‘baseband chipsets’ which are used to manage the radio interfaces — like WiFi and 4G — inside your mobile phone. The first investigation will look at the conditions Qualcomm set for the sale of its 3G/4G chips and whether it gave financial incentives to customers for buying its chips exclusively. The second investigation concerns Qualcomm’s pricing practices for its 3G chips and if the company used “predatory pricing” to sell them…

Vivaldi, the browser from ex-Opera CEO Jon von Tetzchner, is getting an update today with an interesting new feature. This is the fourth preview build of the browser, which the company expects to be the last before it officially enters beta. The biggest new feature is the ability to use Chrome extensions, which can be installed directly from the Chrome Web Store. If you’ve been considering ditching Chrome, but can’t bear the thought of leaving because you need your extensions there’s no reason to not try Vivaldi now. You can bring across everything you love from Chrome, but enjoy Vivaldi’s speed and the fact that…
