Reddit
In a public AMA, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has promised new content guidelines for the forum site. Reddit has been in turmoil for the past few weeks, culminating in the resignation of former CEO Ellen Pao. As Huffman said yesterday on Reddit, as u/spez, neither he nor cofounder Alexis Ohanian intended the site adhere strictly to free speech. The new content guidelines are meant to be a framework on which Reddit would build an official content policy, Huffman wrote: No company is perfect at addressing these hard issues. We’ve spent the last few days here discussing and agree that an approach like this…

Back in June, Facebook made a big move to separate Messenger from the social network by allowing users in the US, Canada, Venezuela and Peru to sign up without a Facebook account. Now it’s expanding the functionality globally. Messenger team member David Marcus posted on his page to showcase the expanded logins. I haven’t written more than a single check in the past year, and it’s because of Venmo. It has become my go-to for everything that requires me exchanging money with someone, from settling up with friends after brunch to sending my roommate my portion of this month’s utility bill. As it turns out, I’m not alone. In eBay’s Q2 earnings, the company dropped an interesting nugget of information: In the past three months, People have sent $1.6 billion dollars using the service — an increase of 247 percent year over year. Venmo has exploded over the past year, and its mobile…

windows 10 redmond
Windows 10 is coming soon, and if you want to get your hands on a physical copy, that may actually be possible. A few Amazon pages have popped up, selling Windows 10 on a flash drive — direct from Microsoft. The Windows 10 Home edition USB drive will cost $119.99 via Amazon, while Windows 10 Pro (in English and Spanish) will set you back $199.99. Speaking to VentureBeat, Microsoft acknowledged we’d be able to buy Windows 10 on USB “in retail channels shortly after launch.”Amazon seems to be the only outlet that currently has the USB drives available for pre-order, and…

apps
Counting Crows sang: “It’s 4:30am on a Tuesday, it doesn’t get much worse than this…” Programmers know that feeling all too well. They’ve all been there and done that. After drinking dozens of cups of coffee, looking all blurry eyed after being up all night fixing bugs, checking and adding just one more feature. It’s the feeling of: There, it’s uploading. The problem is solved and that’s it! But wait a minute, the compiler is stuck. Did everyone input their code yet? What’s “messed up” this time? Where are the testers now? The tester finally enters. “Did you call me?”…
