Hands on: Yahoo Livetext is the perfect app for livestreaming your nostrils

yahoo livetext handsons
Yahoo just took the lid off its new audioless livestreaming app, Livetext. The idea is similar to what Skype would be if your Skype was muted and you can see chat texts overlaid atop the video stream. During Yahoo’s announcement, many of us in the TNW virtual newsroom were skeptical. With Periscope, Meerkat, Facebook Messenger, Snapchat, Vine and Skype already crowding the market, it seemed odd that Yahoo decided to create an app for the internet generation who are used to the noiseless world of GIFs. Really, go ask the next teen you find and see if they know what Yahoo is.…

Amazon Dash buttons — the branded little doodads that automatically order and ship specific items directly to your house with virtually no effort on your part — are finally available to Amazon Prime members today for just $4.99. Purchase one of 18 Dash buttons and never run out of the stuff you always seem to run out of. That’s really where Dash buttons do their handiwork: my house, for example, can never seem to keep stock of paper towels or toilet paper. Amazon offers branded products — currently Bounty for your hands and Cottonelle for your bum — that can be assigned to…

Oculus’ Henry the Hedgehog will make you want to hug him, but you can’t

Oculus is making a play for your emotions. Henry the Hedgehog is the star of Oculus’ second short film, which draws you straight into his endearing little world — a place you may not want to leave. Rather than just be entertained, Oculus also wants you to care about Henry. The sweet little hedgehog really wants to hug people, but his spikes keep him from really connecting with them physically. How can you not love that, right? It’s all very familiar; Disney and Pixar brought empathy to slick computer animation with films like Toy Story. Oculus is taking it a…

We’re not even done with launch day, and it already looks like Windows 10 is getting the ball rolling with third-party software: Twitter just launched a native app for the operating system. Without requiring you to log in, the app showcases top trending tweets, photos and videos. It’ll also feed you tweets in Live Tiles right from the Start Menu. The logged-out functionality is a nod to recent changes Twitter has been making to lure in new users. Recently the company implemented similar features for its hub on the Web, and Twitter hopes the upcoming Project Lightning will turn the…

As the dust settles at Reddit, CEO Steve Huffman has updated the community on what the company has planned. While most of his post is as you may expect it to be (community quarantines, bug fixes), Huffman did note there would soon be more tools to prevent harassment — all the way down to private messages. In the “next up” section of the update, three forthcoming features are noted: Anti-abuse and harassment (e.g. preventing PM harassment) Anti-brigading Modmail improvements A commenter suggested PM harassment be handled by asking site administrators to look at unwelcome messages. Huffman acknowledged that’s exactly what Reddit was working…
