See San Francisco reimagined as a startup map

Tech rules just about everything in San Francisco. Yeah, sure, there are definitely other industries here, but it’s hard to imagine exactly how much tech money flows through this city, and how many startups actually survive and thrive in this seven-by-seven-mile city. CartoDB has mashed up startup data from Crunchbase with the San Francisco Map to show how tech is found all around the city. The method for the map is simple: startups with major funding get bigger streets in relative  to where they are. “That’s kind of one of the neat things we do, is that we can do…

Russia considers banning gay-themed emojis under ‘propaganda laws’

Could it be possible that gay-themed emoji — where tiny boy and girl heads are depicted as kissing or with a heart in between them — actually promote homosexuality and thus violate Russian law? Stop laughing. That is the burning question that The Federal Service For Supervision of Communication, Information Technology and Mass Media — the agency that oversees Russian media — is now looking into. Mikhail Marchenko, a senator in Russia’s parliament has called for a probe of whether such emoji, as they appear on Facebook, violate the country’s 2013 statute prohibiting “homosexual propaganda” to the country’s youth. Note that the investigation involves only Facebook’s use…

If you grew up using a Mac — or have any connection with computer graphics or design — the name Susan Kare will be familiar. She is the one who created the original Macintosh icons like the Lasso, the Grabber and the Paint Bucket, as well as the operating system’s typefaces like Chicago — which was also used for the iPod. Today, Pinterest has announced that Kare is joining its creative team as a product design lead. In this full-time permanent position, Kare will be one of the designers responsible for the interface and design of products for the Pinterest website and apps.  She will report…

Space-aged whiskey is our civilization’s final frontier

Suntory
Scientists are always looking for new things to learn about space, but this time Japanese distillery Suntory is the one pioneering a new field of research: how whiskey ages in in microgravity conditions. The theory is that places with constant temperatures and little movements produce the best taste – Suntory refers to it as “mellowness” in distilled drinks. Given that the International Space Station meets those qualifications, it seems like the right place to test the hypothesis. The first shipment whiskey is set to arrive at the space station beginning August 16th, and it will return in a year. A…

Google Hangouts gives users more control over how they’re contacted by others

HangoutsContactTNW
Hangouts users on Android will now get a better idea of who’s trying to contact them. Google is quietly rolling out a new feature for Hangouts under the “how others get in touch with you” heading. In there, you may see a section named “customize invites,” which lets you receive invites from people who have your phone number, email, or the mysterious “everyone else.” The current default for new chat notifications is pretty static (you get notifications for all users the same way). With this, users will either be able to contact you directly, send an invitation, or you can…
