You’ll have to cut Iraq some slack for being late to the tech startup party. Since at least the early 2000s, the country was the embodiment of civil war, violence, and protracted armed conflicts. But it all changed this April, when Iraq hosted its first ever nationwide hackathon. The aim was to bring together aspiring entrepreneurs, and solve some of the pressing issues faced by the country through innovation. Organized by the Iraq Technology and Entrepreneurship Alliance (ITEA), the event saw a collaborative effort between 700 youth activists across the cities of Erbil, Baghdad, Basra, Sulaimaniya, and Mosul. Between developing…

Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff. As of March 2019, there were over 38 million cars on the roads of Great Britain, according to transport and policy organization the RAC Foundation. With more cars in use, it can get increasingly tough to find a parking spot, let alone remember where you parked your car. Don’t worry though, you can use Google Maps to remember where you parked. Here’s how to do it. Hopefully it’ll take one more stress out of your…

Have you noticed a shift in the tasks you’re being asked to do as a recruiter recently? Things like monitoring your company’s reputation on review sites, being sure to respond to mentions on social media, and even writing posts for the company blog you weren’t even aware existed? That means your department is moving into taking a longer view of the recruiting process and pivoting to include what’s called recruitment marketing (RM). Recruitment marketing is the use of tactics borrowed from the world of content, or inbound, marketing and applying them to more traditional HR practices. There’s a heavy dose…

Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff. FaceApp is the talk of the town right now. Everyone’s trying out this AI-powered app to see how they’ll look when they’re old. While this is all fun and games, as we’ve pointed out before, there are plenty of privacy concerns surrounding this app. The biggest of ’em all is that according to the app’s privacy policy, it can use your photos and data for commercial purposes. Now, you wouldn’t want to give your data away…

We shouldn’t colonize Mars without knowing if aliens were there before us

Jul19

Posted In: Around the Web, Space, syndication

Transforming the red planet to support life has long been a dream of science fiction. Mars is now too cold to support life. Its atmosphere is also too thin to protect any living organisms from harmful radiation. But a new study suggests that local conditions could be changed using an inch of “aerogel” – a synthetic and ultralight material made by taking a gel and replacing the liquid component with a gas. The authors behind the paper, published in Nature Astronomy, claim the technique could produce habitable regions on the red planet and potentially allow life to develop and thrive…
