Australian retirees lose their $900,000 pension fund in cryptocurrency scam

A retired couple in Australia have reportedly lost $900,000 to an elaborate cryptocurrency scam.  Mike and Karen Taylor were traveling around Australia in a camper van when they fell for the online scam. The cryptocurrency website they used looked legitimate, Taylor told 7News. It’s not clear how the scam operated, but presumably, the couple invested money on the website enticed by the promise of high returns. US watchdog preps BitMEX probe over alleged illegal cryptocurrency trade

Cryptocurrency exchange BitMEX is being investigated by the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).  According to Bloomberg, which cites people familiar with the matter, the CFTC is looking into whether BitMEX broke the rules by allowing American customers to trade on the platform, which is not registered with the agency. The probe is ongoing and it’s worth noting that the regulator’s investigations don’t always lead to allegations of misconduct. The CFTC declined to comment, Bloomberg says.
