Why US public schools’ creepy use of surveillance AI should frighten you

Jul23
by Sindy Cator on July 23, 2019 at 10:18 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, artificial intelligence

Public schools across the US continue to spend millions implementing AI-powered surveillance solutions alleged to prevent or mitigate violence. The only problem: most of them don’t work. US schools now rival China’s when it comes to ubiquitous surveillance, yet our students remain at the highest risk for violence among developed nations. What gives? The ideas seem sound. Adults can’t possibly see and hear everything that happens on a school campus, so startups are marketing automated surveillance solutions to cover the gaps. One company says their facial recognition systems could have prevented the Parkland massacre. Another startup specializing in gunshot detection…

A new controller aims to fix the Nintendo Switch’s lack of voice chat

It’s 2019, the Nintendo Switch is the vanguard of the next generation of video game consoles, and — in case you needed reminding — it still doesn’t have voice chat support. Well, at least the company hasn’t personally enabled it yet. Third-party sources are working to patch the gap. Kotaku today highlighted a new third-party Switch controller called the Faceoff Deluxe+ from PDP. It has — gasp — a headphone jack, a feature formerly exclusive to the Switch tablet itself. That caught my attention, because up to now the only time I’ve used headphones with my Switch was when it was…

Watch Ford’s electric F-150 tow a million+ pounds like nobody’s business

Ford promised us an electric version of its F-150 truck was on the way back in 2017, but it’s been mostly silent on the matter since. Though the vehicles is still years from launch, today the company came out in a big way, showing a prototype electric F-150 towing a train weighing over a million pounds. In the video, Ford invites some current F-150 owning-men to a train yard. They are apparently unaware of the company’s plans until the electric F-150’s chief engineer, Linda Zhang, reveals the new model and its burden of the day. It’s an ad, so of…

New UK PM Boris Johnson (still) thinks there’s a tech solution for the Irish border

Perhaps we should feel sorry for Boris Johnson. He just attained a long-held ambition of his, ascending to the office of Prime Minister following a tight competition with his Conservative rivals. And now he has to figure out Brexit, with a deadline of October 31. Thank you all for the incredible honour you have done me. The time for campaigning is over and the time for work begins to unite our country and party, deliver Brexit and defeat Corbyn. I will work flat out to repay your confidence — Boris Johnson (@BorisJohnson) July 23, 2019 Brexit was the poison pill…

‘YouTubers’ author Chris Stokel-Walker on how to fix the world’s biggest video platform

Jul23
by Sindy Cator on July 23, 2019 at 3:21 pm

Over the past couple of years, YouTube’s been in hot water over a myriad of issues that would give any CEO sleepless nights. The list of offenses includes failing to police problematic videos appearing on its platform, toxic comments that have pushed it to disable the feature for some content, and troubling recommendations delivered to unwitting users, including children. Naturally, the company has been lambasted over these shortcomings – rightly so, many people would argue. I’ve been on that side of the debate too, having written about the platform’s mistakes over the past few years. That said, I began to wonder if…
