A US federal judge has rejected AT&T‘s request to dismiss a $224 million lawsuit over a devastating SIM-swapping incident that led to $24 million in stolen cryptocurrency. A press release confirms the communications giant will face court over allegations it violated the Federal Communications Act, a consumer contract, as well as several other laws, when hackers assumed the identity (and telephone account) of cryptocurrency investor Michael Terpin in 2017. “Judge Wright strongly repudiated AT&T’s audacious bid to prevent [Terpin] from demonstrating to a jury the carrier’s contempt for consumers’ privacy and utter disregard of its legal obligations to prevent this very type…

Microsoft has invested $1 billion in Elon Musk-founded (Musk has since departed) artificial intelligence company OpenAI in an effort build supercomputer AI technologies for its Azure cloud services. The two companies will join forces to build large-scale AI systems for Azure. The end goal? Developing artificial general intelligence (AGI), another term for autonomous computers that can see the world and solve tasks the same way humans do – basically, what we always wanted ‘AI‘ to be. As part of the deal, OpenAI – which has previously leveraged its technology to annihilate gamers, predict language, and generate coherent blocks of text from…

Apple has filed a new patent for a mixed reality headset that could feature an array of sensors to track the eyes, gestures and even facial expressions of its users. Titled “Display System Having Sensors,” the patent filing — first reported by Variety — shows that the company intends to combine these inputs for a system “that provides 3D virtual views of a user’s environment augmented with virtual content.” The application was filed with the US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) on March 21, 2019. It was published last week on July 18. The proposed system could have hand sensors,…

It also loads voice calls 10 times quicker. In addition to the boost in performance, the new Slack version lets you preview conversations and chats you’ve already loaded, even when your network connection is down. The announcement comes only a week after Slack forced…

Con artists will try anything to make their schemes appear legitimate to unwitting victims. In a recent email doing the rounds to financial advisers, scammers have been impersonating the UK‘s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) luring victims into a trap with Bitcoin. The email features the FCA‘s recognizable maroon branding and logo. It also features branding from UK financial services regulatory body, the Prudential Regulation Authority, the FT Adviser reports. The illegitimate communication had a subject line that read “Guaranteed chance to earn,” followed by a paragraph of text that suggested Bitcoin is set to rise in value over the next…
