Accept my first-born in penance, Asus — I was wrong about gaming phones

I’ve written about gaming phones before. Whether it was the unveiling of the Razer Phone 2, the Asus ROG Phone, or my review of the latter, there was something that always popped up: these are going to be niche devices. In other words, they’re never gonna be popular. So, considering two-million units of Asus‘ ROG Phone II was just pre-ordered in China (according to Android Police), I probably should eat my hat. Well, at least part of it. If I had a hat. First off, the Asus ROG Phone 2? As the name suggests, this is the second iteration of the, uh,…

An 84-year-old woman in the US has been targeted by Bitcoin sextortionists after she signed up to Panera, a well-known restaurant brand in the US, to get a free bagel for her birthday. Arlene Kaganove told NBC 5 she had applied for a “MyPanera” reward card to get a free everything bagel on her next birthday. “I am always signing up for whatever comes free on my birthday,” she said. “Never anticipated it would lead to extortion letters.” After she signed up for the program, unsuspecting Kagonove began getting several threatening emails. “They say they have been watching me watch porn,” Kaganove…

Security firm releases flawed blockchain into the wild to help educate hackers

Jul26

Despite their supposed security, there are still many exploitable vulnerabilities that can compromise a blockchain. But one security firm thinks it can fix that, and it believes the key to developing more secure blockchains is to start with a really insecure one. Cybersecurity firm, Kudelski Security, has announced that it will be demonstrating its deliberately insecure blockchain at the Black Hat USA infosec convention in Las Vegas next month. The company claims it’s the industry’s first intentionally vulnerable blockchain. Kudelski Security‘s blockchain, called FumbleChain, is designed to be deliberately vulnerable so that budding hackers can ply their trade and try…

This retro-styled OS is actually a delightful feed of 90s-inspired tunes and videos

I’m a sucker for old-school operating system aesthetics – especially when they’ve been repurposed to run modern web services. This is why Poolside.FM – a gorgeous music and video feed disguised as a retro Mac OS – immediately piqued my curiosity. The summer-styled website comes with its own music player, a video player with a selection of 80s and 90s footage to accompany the tunes, and an Instagram launcher that lets your browse through Poolside.FM’s feed. It also lets you choose between five different color themes for its PoolOS layout. Currently, PoolOS supports three separate playlists – the default Poolside.FM,…
