Norwegian startup ClexBio is bioengineering human veins to implant inside a patient’s body. Together with CSEM, a Swiss R&D centre, the company has built a prototype bioreactor to grow the veins. Pre-clinical tests in animal models are already underway. Based on the early results, the team is confident that the implants don’t trigger an immune response in patients. Instead, they turn into functional tissue that integrates with the body. If further tests prove successful, the implants could treat severe chronic venous insufficiency, a painful condition caused when veins have problems moving blood to the heart. But veins are just the start…

The parent company of Amsterdam-based Booking.com faces a record fine from Spain’s antitrust watchdog, as Europe steps up its efforts to crack down on tech giants and create breathing room for smaller companies. Following a probe launched in 2022, Spain’s National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) has found Booking Holdings guilty of anti-competitive practices, the online travel giant said in a statement on Thursday.  The alleged infringements include preventing local hotel groups from offering deals that are cheaper on their own sites than the price they offer on booking.com.  Booking faces a provisional penalty of €486mn, in what would be…

New Russian PSYOPs mix disinformation, spam, and Navalny

Researchers have discovered a Russia-aligned PSYOPs campaign with a curious mix of espionage, disinformation, and Canadian pharmacy spam. It also has links to Alexi Navalny, the Kremlin critic who died last week in an Arctic penal colony. The PSYOPs — a military term for “psychological operations” — were unearthed by analysts at ESET, a cybersecurity firm headquartered in Slovakia. They named the campaign “Operation Texonto.” The operation disseminated war-related disinformation to Ukrainians via spam emails. Through two waves of messages, the PSYOPs spread fears about shortages of food, medicines, and heating supplies — typical themes of Russian propaganda.  Alongside the disinformation,…

Amsterdam-based Fastned has raised more than €24mn in new bonds to grow its fast charging network across Europe. Investors have also extended €3.5mn from earlier bonds, bringing the total funding to over €27.5mn. Founded in 2012, the startup provides over 280 fast charging stations across several European countries, including the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and France. In January last year, it announced an expansion to Spain as well. Drivers can add up to 300km of range in about 15 minutes, depending on the EV type. Notably, Fastned provides electricity using renewable energy from solar and wind power. Fastned offers both a…
