How can startups raise funds in this shitty economical climate? 3 investors share their insider tips

When it comes to raising startup capital, 2023 was rough, to say the least. In fact, Pitchbook characterised it as Europe’s “most depressed” year in a decade in terms of VC exit value. The question is, will 2024 be a turning point? And if not, how can startups become part of that small percentage that does complete a successful funding round? If you’re a startup attending TNW Conference 2024, you’re in luck. VCs will be on the lookout for disruptive business models and innovative applications for emerging tech. But how can you stand out from the crowd? That’s exactly what…

‘World’s most efficient large aircraft’ seeks approval for ‘flying bum’

A blimp billed as the “world’s most efficient large aircraft” — but better known as the “The Flying Bum” — is applying for approval to take off. Officially named the Airlander 10, the voluptuous vehicle resembles the legendary Zeppelin. Like its fabled ancestor, the Airlander is greener than the commercial planes currently spraying CO2 across the sky. Much greener, in fact. Powered by a combination of electricity and helium, the aircraft promises zero-emissions flights by 2030. It’s also got a sizeable capacity. The bulbous blimp can fit 100 seats or a 10-tonne payload between those shapely curves.  Those assets will now…

Klarna deepens automation fears with claim AI assistant does work of 700 people

In a statement that’s likely to spark controversy, Klara announced that its AI assistant does the work of 700 full-time agents. The statement might raise skepticism for those who remember that the Swedish fintech unicorn laid off roughly the same number of people in 2022, citing inflation and economic uncertainty. Others might also recall that in December, the company freezed hiring on account of AI “productivity gains.” Klarna partnered with OpenAI last year, integrating ChatGPT technology into a plug-in for shopping. The app-based assistant can perform a range of customer service tasks such as inquiries, refunds, and returns. It’s —…

Regurgitated ‘American Pie’ adds sour taste to GenAI copyright claims

Feb27
by Sindy Cator on February 27, 2024 at 6:56 pm

Don McClean has always had to share “American Pie.” Since since its release in 1971, the hit song has re-emerged in covers by Madonna, parodies by Weird Al Yankovic, serenades by South Korean presidents, subplots in Marvel movies, and even CIA torture techniques. But these days, McClean’s leading imitators aren’t even human. You can interrogate the culprits for yourself. Just load OpenAI’s ChatGPT and prompt the text generator to “write the lyrics to a song about the day the music died.” Invariably, the tool’s output will spit out lyrics or themes from “American Pie” — and sometimes the same chorus.…

Mistral releases new ‘top-tier’ AI model, partners with Microsoft

Less than a year since its founding, Paris-based Mistral is launching a new AI flagship model for developers, Mistral Large — just a few months after the release of its first model, Mistral 7B.  Much like its predecessor, Mistral Large is an open-source generative AI model. According to the startup, it boasts “top-tier” reasoning capabilities and is proficient in code and mathematics. It’s also multilingual and fluent in five languages (English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian).  “This is a significant milestone for us, as the unparalleled performance of this multilingual model will continue to push the boundaries of what is…
