London-based Gocycle, founded by Richard Thorpe, a former industrial designer at McLaren, has released the first images of its new range of folding cargo ebikes.  Gocycle, best known for its sleek folding ebikes, first announced its move into the cargo bike market back in February, along with some shiny 3D renders of two models — the CXi and the more premium CX-plus.   “Right now all we have is a promise and a bunch of image renders, not even photographs of a real bike,” wrote The Verge at the time.  Well, for all the sceptics out there, these images confirm the…

Startup building ‘biowearables’ for chronic kidney disease nets €2.3M

Paris-based Metyos has raised €2.3mn in pre-seed funding to improve the lives and health outcomes of chronic kidney disease patients with its biowearable technology. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects 10% of the population and is the third fastest-growing cause of death worldwide. It’s also associated with a heavy financial impact on healthcare, with its treatment costing the EU €140bn per year. To fight the disease, Metyos has developed a biowearable sensor in the form of a patch, which provides real-time readings on biomarkers related to CKD. The readings are fed into the startup’s disease management platform, which doctors can use…

In 2021, there were over 3000 fatal and 2.9 million non-fatal accidents in workplaces across the EU. Over a fifth of these, perhaps unsurprisingly, occurred within the construction sector. All of them, in theory, were preventable.  Stockholm-based startup Buddywise has built a set of computer vision models that scan a workplace and warn you of potentially dangerous situations. The AI platform sends out emergency alerts in the event of an injury or death. The company says it’s working towards a “zero-injury future”.    “Everybody should be able to return home unharmed after a day’s work, so we can’t accept the status…

Italy’s prime minister Giorgia Meloni is seeking €100,000 in damages after deepfake pornographic videos of her were shared online.  Meloni is seeking compensation from a 40-year-old and his father over the deepfakes, which were viewed millions of times. The deepfake porn videos were uploaded prior to her appointment as prime minister in 2022.  If successful, the PM has vowed to donate the money to a fund to support women who have been victims of gender-based violence. While officials in this case were able to identify the perpetrators, who may now face jail time, most go under the radar. The creators…
