Forget qubits: Quantum physicists successfully teleported ‘qutrits’ in breakthrough experiments

Two independent research teams recently published studies indicating they’ve successfully teleported a qutrit — possibly within days of each other. Now, both await the scientific process of peer review to see which will ultimately get credit for being the first humans to do so. But what’s a qutrit? It’s a lot like a qubit, an entangled pair of particles used to carry information in a quantum computing system. Qubits are analogous to bits, the binary units of information used by classical computers like the one you’re reading this on. Where bits can be represented by the numbers zero and one, qubits…

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10 is here with beastly specs and no headphone jack

Right on cue, Samsung has officially revealed the Galaxy Note 10, and for the first time in the note series, an even larger ‘Plus’ model. Granted, ‘Revealed’ might be a bit of a strong word given how much we’d learned about the devices going into today’s Galaxy Unpacked event, but it’s nonetheless welcome to have some real confirmation. This is the First things first, lets do away with the specs. For the smaller Note 10: 6.3-inch display Dynamic AMOLED Display Snapdragon 855/ Exynos 9825 IP68 weather resistant 8GB RAM, 256 SSD 3,500 mAh Battery 25W ‘Superfast’ charging, supports up to…

Report: Rockstar offers contractors full-time work after crunch controversy

Aug07

Posted In: Around the Web, gaming

As we hear more and more about a game industry drowning in crunch, we finally get some good news: Rockstar employees who felt the pinch the hardest are being given better positions. It’s a tiny step, but hopefully the first of many — goodness only knows the industry desperately needs the change. There’s a rising tide of gamers who both know about and disapprove of formerly-accepted industry practices. For example, “crunch” — or the practice of overworking game developers in the final weeks of development time in order to get the game out by the deadline — has been a…

Scientists ask NASA to reconsider Mars mission after studying effects of space radiation

Aug07
by Sindy Cator on August 7, 2019 at 6:39 pm
Posted In: Around the Web, Space

A team of scientists recently conducted a first-of-its-kind experiment to study the effects of space radiation on a living brain. And the results don’t bode well for NASA‘s planned mission to Mars. The research was conducted by lead author Charles Limoli and scientists from University of California, Irvine, Stanford University, Colorado State University, and the Eastern Virginia School of Medicine. It involved using a new neutron irradiation facility to expose laboratory mice to the same levels of radiation they’d experience in space. According to the team’s paper: We have uncovered that realistic, low dose rate exposures produce serious neurocognitive complications…
