A team of scientists from MIT and Rice University recently discovered a new method for creating qubits that could revolutionize both quantum computing and cancer research – and all it takes is some household bleach and a UV light. Qubits are the basic units of information used in quantum computing. Typically, when scientists create them they go through a complex process involving lasers or shearing single photons off of light using complex, difficult-to-work-with reactants that produce unwanted side-effects. These time consuming methods often require trial-and-error and seldom produce perfect results. The method created by the MIT/Rice team, however, is quick,…

Samsung might dominate smartphone sales and be a major player on other facets of consumer technology, but it hasn’t had as much luck in the laptop space. After spending some time with its new Galaxy Book S – and despite a few concerns – I think that could be about to change. We already covered the Galaxy Book‘s launch and specs in our announcement post, so I won’t delve too deep into the minutiae of the internals. The main things you need to know: It’s powered by a Qualcomm 8cx ARM processor, has 8GB of RAM, supports LTE, and packs a…

After spending a few years doing pretty much nothing of note with the site, Verizon’s offloading Tumblr to Automattic, the company that owns WordPress. However, despite the new management, the site apparently won’t reinstate its NSFW content. We have big news to share today: @tumblr is joining Automattic, and we couldn’t be more thrilled. Here’s @photomatt’s announcement (on his very own Tumblr site!): https://t.co/gcWqj6wOBO pic.twitter.com/FThTGACK7M — Automattic (@automattic) August 12, 2019 The Wall Street Journal reports Automattic bought Tumblr for an undisclosed amount. Study: Trump’s paid Peter Thiel’s Palantir $1.5B so far to build ICE’s mass-surveillance network

Perhaps no other company has profited more from the Trump administration’s treatment of undocumented immigrants — and US citizens of similar appearance — than Peter Thiel‘s Palantir. A recent investigation, conducted by Mijente, revealed the US government has at least 29 active contracts with the company worth approximately $1.5 billion. This covers Palantir’s work with all four branches of the military, Border Patrol, ICE, and Homeland Security, but it doesn’t even touch on the hundreds of contracts it has with local law enforcement throughout the country. All in all the company’s valued at over $20 billion. Peter Thiel, the tech…
