Facebook’s group privacy settings actually make sense now

Until today, Facebook has given you three options for creating a user group: Open, closed, or ‘secret.’ While the first is pretty obvious, the other two were occasional sources of confusion – an admin might set a group to ‘closed’ without realizing it was still searchable, for instance. Instead there are now just two main types of groups: Public and Private. Public groups can be joined by anyone and are searchable by anyone. Private groups require permission to access. Whether such groups can be found through a search is now controlled through a ‘visibility’ setting. In effect, you can have…

LGBTQ+ creators file lawsuit against YouTube for discrimination

A group of LGBTQ+ YouTubers this week filed a federal lawsuit against Google, claiming the site has engaged in discriminatory practices that deliberately suppress their ability to make money. Part of the problem is that YouTube has kept its algorithms so mysterious, there’s no way to know if it’s deliberately discriminating against any particular group, or if it’s just an offshoot of its recurring problems with ad revenue According to the vid creators, both YouTube‘s algorithms and human reviewers single out content with words like “gay,” “lesbian,” etc, and put it behind an age-restriction gate. Age-restricted videos aren’t eligible for…

Austria, the land of Schnitzels and strudels, has seen confidence in cryptocurrency wane over the past year. According to an online survey conducted by ING, Austrians are most skeptical of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies with only 13 percent of those surveyed saying they saw digital currencies in a positive light. In stark contrast, some 62 percent of Turks said they perceived cryptocurrency in a positive way. Indeed, cryptocurrency‘s reputation suffered somewhat of a downturn in Austrians’ estimation over the past 12 months. Results from last year’s survey showed that 20 percent of Austrians thought cryptocurrency signaled the future of digital…

TikTok has been flooded by scammers promoting adult sites

Aug14

TikTok has been inundated by a slew of scammers seeking to take advantage of its quickly growing userbase, which surpassed 1 billion downloads in February 2019. Security firm Tenable has discovered scammers are leveraging old tactics to get users to sign up for adult services, impersonate popular social media personalities, and artificially boost likes and follower counts. “Given TikTok’s meteoric rise in popularity, it comes as no surprise that scammers would take notice,” wrote Tenable researcher Satnam Narang in a blog post. “So far, these scams appear to be in their infancy.” To get users to sign up for such…
