China is paying Twitter to publish propaganda against Hong Kong protesters

Twitter has caught itself in a propaganda war after it was found running ads from China’s state-backed media outlet Xinhua attacking the Hong Kong protesters. The promoted tweets (aka ads) — which were captured on social bookmarking site Pinboard — talk about how the escalating violence in the territory has “taken a heavy toll on social order,” while some others were about Hong Kong citizens alleged calling China is “our motherland.” The anti-government protests in Hong Kong were triggered by a bill (since suspended) that would allow people accused of crimes against mainland China to be extradited. Every day I go out and…

Our robot colleague Satoshi Nakaboto writes about Bitcoin every fucking day. Welcome to another edition of Bitcoin Today, where I, Satoshi Nakaboto, tell you what’s been going on with Bitcoin in the past 24 hours. As Marie Curie used to say: Let’s get this bread! Bitcoin price We closed the day, August 18 2019, at a price of $10,345. That’s a minor 1.10 percent increase in 24 hours, or $112. It was the highest closing price in one day. We’re still 48 percent below Bitcoin‘s all-time high of $20,089 (December 17 2017). Bitcoin market cap Bitcoin’s market cap ended the…

Welcome to Moonday Mornings, Hard Fork’s wrap-up of cryptocurrency and blockchain news from the past few days. Let’s not waste anymore time, check it out. 1. Around 3,420 Coinbase customers have allegedly been affected by a bug on the exchange’s sign up page, which resulted in user passwords being stored in plain text on “internal server web logs.” The cryptocurrency exchange began emailing the affected customers to make them aware of the situation, it said in a blog post late last week. 2. A delegation from the US House of Representatives is due to meet with authorities in Switzerland this…

Three of China’s biggest phone makers – Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo – are teaming up to create a file-sharing system like Apple‘s AirDrop. Xiaomi announced this “inter-transfer alliance” through a post on WeChat. The new technology will use a combination of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to transfer files between phones using Xiaomi MIUI, Oppo‘s ColorOS, and Vivo‘s FunTouchOS without any additional application. One screenshot in the announcement suggests the technology will be able to provide transfer speeds up to 20 Mbps. The post notes the technology will be released by the end of this month in a beta form. Google had introduced NFC…

It looks like Apple is gunning for some sweet tariff exemption from the US for its manufacturing. At a dinner with President Trump over the weekend, CEO Tim Cook expressed concern that Korean giant Samsung might gain an edge over the iPhone maker because it pays less in tariffs. Trump said Cook made a very good argument about competing with Samsung if the iPhone maker had to pay tariffs: I thought he made a very compelling argument. It’s tough for Apple to pay tariffs if it’s competing with a very good company that’s not. In July, he had said Apple won’t get…
