Reddit tests live broadcasting with a Public Access Network

Reddit today revealed it’s testing its own livestreaming service, called RPAN or Reddit Public Access Network. It’ll be running all week, presumably to see what kind of shows redditors put on before the site rolls it out to everyone. The R/PAN subreddit includes a series of short videos comparing the service to public access TV. The videos, which appeared over the weekend before the official announcement, appeared intentionally vague to tease the coming announcement. It seemed to work, because there’s nothing Reddit likes more than a good mystery to solve. According to the RPAN sub, the feature will be available…

Apple Arcade will reportedly set you back just $5 a month

A new report offers more details about Apple’s rather opaque plans for its game subscription service, Arcade. If the details are accurate, an Arcade subscription could be one of the more cost-effective gaming plans out there. According to a report from 9to5Mac, Arcade will cost subscribers $4.99 a month after the initial free trial period. It’ll also be available to every member on a Family Sharing account. There will also be a free trial. The alleged price of the subscription is fairly competitive with other monthly subscription services in which you’re given access to a collection of games. Google’s Stadia Pro and Xbox…

Twitter announces complete advertising ban on state-run media outlets

Aug19

Posted In: Around the Web, Social Media

Twitter earlier today announced it’s banned more than 900 accounts purported to be linked to a China-sponsored disinformation campaign against the citizens of Hong Kong, now it’s extending its policies to ban advertising from all state-sponsored news sources globally. The ban will encompass any news-media organization found to be “financially or editorially controlled by the state.” Cue the jokes about CNN and Fox News from their respective political detractors. The blog post announcing the ban states: We are updating our advertising policies with respect to state media. Going forward, we will not accept advertising from state-controlled news media entities … This is a…

The Moonprentice: Newt Gingrich wants ‘reality show’ contest with Musk and Bezos to colonize Luna

A coalition including Michael Jackson’s former publicist, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, and an Air Force general want US president Donald Trump to turn the race to colonize the moon into a reality show-esque contest between billionaires. The proposal, obtained by Politico, would offer up a paltry $1B to any involved party able to land a “roomy, comfortable human base on the Moon,” and another $1B to the company that can maintain that base. Two billion dollars may seem like a nice chunk of change to most of us, but the same report says NASA‘s currently spending that much per…

Disney reveals where you can stream its Disney+ service

Aug19
by Sindy Cator on August 19, 2019 at 5:56 pm
Posted In: Apps, Around the Web

Disney today revealed more about its upcoming streaming service, Disney+. Specifically, we now know which devices the service will be on, and to which countries it’ll be rolling out at launch. Disney revealed the new streaming service would be rolling out to Canada and the Netherlands on November 12, the same day it launches in the US. It also rolls out in Australia and New Zealand on November 19. Disney‘s CEO Bob Iger said in an earning’s call earlier this month the service would launch in two international markets, so presumably this is where he meant. No word yet on when…
