Hostinger’s database of 14 million customers’ info hacked

Web hosting provider Hostinger has forcibly reset all of its client passwords as a “precautionary measure” following an unauthorized access of its customer database, which contains some 14 million users. “During this incident, an unauthorized third party has gained access to our internal system API, one of which had access to hashed passwords and other non-financial data about our customers,” the Lithuania-based company said. Hostinger — founded in 2004 — has over 29 million users across 178 countries. The security incident is said to have come to light on August 23, when it was alerted to a breach of one its…

Ever listened to This American Life, the mother of all storytelling podcasts? If not, you should. If yes, you know it’s a weekly podcast that runs about an hour per episode. It’s made by a team of about 20 people. I’ve always been impressed by the frequency and quality of their output. After creating a podcast for TNW, I’m in complete awe. Turns out: podcast making might be the least time-efficient way to tell a story. At the same time, it was completely worth it. At TNW, we’re proud to present our very first podcast, Forensic Finance, made with the…

Software development is broken — here’s how to fix it

Aug26
by Sindy Cator on August 26, 2019 at 11:00 am
Posted In: Around the Web, Podium

In the software industry, the product development cycle is broken. It’s costly. It’s laborious. And too often, product teams fail to meet their customers’ needs. And this is especially true in the business-to-business market. More than one in three “enterprise projects” — those solutions created for entire organizations, rather than individuals — come in over budget. Almost 40 percent take longer than estimated. And 35 percent miss customers’ expectations.  Fortunately, there’s a simple solution to this widespread problem. Enterprise software brands can delight their clients, and reduce costly failures, by bringing customers into the development process much sooner.  Too many…

CHEAP: Begone, darkness — these Philips Hue lightbulbs are only $10 each

Aug26
by Sindy Cator on August 26, 2019 at 10:50 am
Posted In: Around the Web, Plugged

Welcome to CHEAP, our series about things that are good, but most of all, cheap. CHEAP! If you told me a decade ago that I’d be enthusiastically writing something praising lightbulbs, I would’ve probably shaken my head in disgust at my future self. Thing is, I don’t feel any shame: lightbulbs in our current technological age are cool. Changing the lighting in your house with only your voice is just a badass feeling. There’s no other way to describe it, it’s the sort of future that Star Trek promised us. And, arguably, the leader in this field is Philips. The company’s Hue range…
