How to try Microsoft’s Chromium-powered Edge Beta

Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff. Towards the end of 2018, Microsoft surprised everyone by announcing it was shifting Edge from a custom engine to Google’s ubiquitous and open-source Chromium platform. By switching to Chromium, Microsoft could better support constantly evolving web standards, ensuring that you wouldn’t come across the occasional glitches that occurred with its proprietary engine. Now you can try it for yourself, even if you’re not a developer. To be clear, Microsoft first allowed public access to the new Edge back…

Welcome to TNW Basics, a collection of tips, guides, and advice on how to easily get the most out of your gadgets, apps, and other stuff. Ever wanted to make your WhatsApp messages look a little different? And by different I mean wacky and oddly formatted? Turns out there’s a way to format your texts with bolding, italics, strikethroughs, and good ol’ monospace. Didn’t know that was possible? Turns out it’s not exactly common knowledge — but now that I know how to do it, I can’t stop sending missives using WhatsApp‘s formatting. Sure, you could use the formatting options built into your phone’s…

Babbel’s update encourages users to chart their own language course

Babbel, the popular language-learning app, is getting a makeover. Updated language lessons now put the spotlight on bite-sized lessons, and users are encouraged to choose which lessons are more relevant to them. We got a chance to check out the new app and we’re liking what we saw so far. Content refreshes, especially for those as long-lived as Babbel (which was launched in 2008), are a pretty common occurrence in the lifespan of an app or digital service. Sometimes it’s a new look (see Evernote’s decade-mark revamp), while sometimes it’s new content for a changing world. In Babbel‘s case, it’s…

For the past few years now, OnePlus has launched two phones per year – one in the spring, and an upgraded ‘T’ model in the fall. We may have gotten our first look at a big design change coming to the OnePlus 7T Pro (or just 7T) change in the series thanks to leaker Evan Blass. Notably, the device seems to incorporate a large circular camera module on its rear. Way back in December of 2018, Ishan Agarwal posted an image that appeared to show OnePlus CEO Pete Lau alongside a TV showing a prototype OnePlus device with a large…

Dear Netflix: Please ditch the algorithm and focus on human-curated ‘Collections’

Aug23
by Sindy Cator on August 23, 2019 at 9:28 pm

Netflix is reportedly testing an all-new recommendation system that harnesses the power of employed biological neural networks – that’s humans if you insist on dumbing it down. Dubbed ‘Collections,’ the new system works like every collection of anything did before about 10 years ago – people sort it out so you don’t have to. I think this is a fabulous idea and so should you. The way Netflix does things now involves artificial intelligence and necromancy. The company gathers data on everything its users do on the platform, and then feeds that data to a bunch of machine-learning algorithms that…
