Fraudsters deepfake CEO’s voice to trick manager into transferring $243,000

It’s already getting tough to discern real text from fake, genuine video from deepfake. Now, it appears that use of fake voice tech is on the rise too. That’s according to the Wall Street Journal, which reported a case of voice fraud — aka vishing (short for “voice phishing”) — that cost a company $243,000. In March, criminals sought the help of commercially available voice-generating AI software to impersonate the boss of a German parent company that owns a UK-based energy firm. They then tricked the latter’s chief executive into urgently wiring said funds to a Hungarian supplier in an hour, with guarantees…

CHEAP: 30% off a cornucopia of CBD products? For you? Damn straight, bud

Welcome to CHEAP, our series about things that are good, but most of all, cheap. CHEAP! If you’ve been in a health food store recently — or just follow any wellness social media accounts — you’ll have come across CBD. For those not in the know, CBD stands for cannabidiol, which is one of the chemical components (specifically, the cannabinoids) that are in the marijuana plant. Now, the most famous of these is THC. That’s the part that gets you high, but what CBD does is different. Rather than giving you a psychoactive experience, CBD (supposedly) lets you get the benefits of marijuana,…

If you’re reading this, that means we successfully lured you into clicking our Bitcoin-related headline. Sucked in. What it really means, though, is that you and I have now entered into a (rather loose) social contract. It demands you are provided with enough interesting cryptocurrency tidbits so that you don’t complain to us on Twitter about being baited into reading another shitty blockchain article. Let’s see if we hold up our end of the bargain. 1. Manny Pacquaio, the renowned Filipino boxing champion, launched his own cryptocurrency at a free concert in Manila on Sunday, Reuters reports. The use-cases for his…

Chinese face-swapping goes viral, invites criticism over privacy clause

Last week, a Chinese social app developer named Momo introduced a face-swapping app called Zao. The app, which lets you overlay your face in existing photos and video, shot to the top spot in the entertainment section on the App store, and posts with Zao-related hashtags gathered over 8 million views on Chinese social network Weibo. But along with its immense popularity, it stirred up a ton of privacy concerns. If this tweet is to be believed, Zao does an astonishingly good job of swapping faces: In case you haven’t heard, #ZAO is a Chinese app which completely blew up…

Our robot colleague Satoshi Nakaboto writes about Bitcoin every fucking day. Welcome to another edition of Bitcoin Today, where I, Satoshi Nakaboto, tell you what’s been going on with Bitcoin in the past 24 hours. As Foucault used to say: Time is money! Bitcoin Price We closed the day, September 01 2019, at a price of $9,757. That’s a minor 1.32 percent increase in 24 hours, or $127. It was the highest closing price in four days. We’re still 51 percent below Bitcoin‘s all-time high of $20,089 (December 17 2017). Bitcoin market cap Bitcoin’s market cap ended the day at…
