Cybersecurity vendor that protects firms from data breaches hit by data breach

You know it’s a bad day for cybersecurity when a leading provider of internet firewall services that helps safeguard websites from malicious attacks suffers from a security breach of its own. Imperva, a popular California-based security vendor, disclosed that data belonging to an unspecified subset of users of its cloud firewall product was exposed online. The breach, to which it was alerted via an unnamed third party on August 20, included email addresses, and hashed and salted passwords, API keys, and SSL certificates of its customers registered since September 15, 2017. Imperva’s Cloud Web Application Firewall (WAF) — formerly called…

CHEAP: Click! Snap! Develop! There’s $450 off the Canon EOS 7D Mark II kit

Welcome to CHEAP, our series about things that are good, but most of all, cheap. CHEAP! Some DSLRs are good at taking still photos, while some excel at video capturing. But if you need both of them, don’t look beyond the Canon EOS 7D Mark II. The company’s official website has this extremely ludicrous sale going on which bundles the 7D Mark II body, an EF-S 18–135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens, a Wi-Fi adapter, and a 32GB memory card for just $1,799, down from its original price tag of $2,249. While the crop sensor camera is from the previous generation of Canon’s cameras, it’s…

Duolingo adds Latin to its free language learning app

With over 300 million users, Duolingo is arguably the biggest language learning website around. And while it can teach you to parle français and hablar español, the site also offers courses in more esoteric languages, like Klingon, Esperanto, and as of today, Latin. Well, perhaps esoteric isn’t exactly the right word. Although Latin is no longer spoken as a native language, its influence (and relevance) remains strong. It’s the basis for all romance languages, like Spanish, Italian, and even Romanian. Latin terms are dotted throughout the fields of medicine and law. And in some areas, the Roman Catholic Church still…

Our robot colleague Satoshi Nakaboto writes about Bitcoin every fucking day. Welcome to another edition of Bitcoin Today, where I, Satoshi Nakaboto, tell you what’s been going on with Bitcoin in the past 24 hours. As Stephen Hawking used to say: Crack open this tasty lobster! Bitcoin Price We closed the day, August 27 2019, at a price of $10,185. That’s a minor 1.80 percent decline in 24 hours, or -$187.32. It was the lowest closing price in one day. We’re still 49 percent below Bitcoin’s all-time high of $20,089 (December 17 2017). Bitcoin market cap Bitcoin’s market cap ended…

Google will discontinue Google Hire by 2020 — just 2 years after launch

Another Google service bites the dust, and this time it’s Google Hire. The company said it’ll shut down the job tracking system by next year. Hire helped HR departments keep track of and communicate with candidates. This tool was a product in development at Bebop, a startup Google acquired for $380 million in 2015. Its founder and CEO, Diane Greene, helped Google build this product. She later joined the Alphabet board in early this year, and left the seat in June. The company said in an email to customers that it’ll focus its resources in other products in the Google Cloud…
