The rise of Pet Tech

It will come as a surprise to precisely nobody that we love our furry friends. Yet although the bond between humans and animals goes back thousands of years, the way we approach pet ownership has changed quite a lot in recent years. Where previous generations would often adopt a pet to either be a companion to their children or help fill the void once those children grew up and left home, Millennials and Gen Z couples tend to get married and have children at a much later age. In fact, some (myself included) choose not to have children at all,…

Why this Polish village hasn’t seen a boy born in 10 years

Sep01

The tiny Polish village of Miejsce Odrzanskie has become the unlikely source of international media attention over the past fortnight as a result of what the New York Times called “a strange population anomaly”. It has now been almost a decade since the last boy was born in this place, with the most recent 12 babies all having been girls. The mayor of the region is quoted in the article as saying there has been “scientific interest” – presumably from geneticists – in exploring what has led to this unusual sequence. He also discusses some glaringly unscientific advice the town…

It’s a huge problem that most health apps are created by men — here’s how to fix that

All shades of pink, flowery patterns, dolls, and miniature kitchens — if you’re a woman, you’ll most likely have had all these and more imposed upon you since early childhood. The stereotypes about women, which in most cases come from men, can be harmful in many ways, influencing everything from career choices to health and wellness.  Speaking of the latter, as a woman and the founder of a healthtech company, I couldn’t help but notice that what wellness apps are offering today does not correspond with the actual needs of women. Most of the founders and top product people at…

CHEAP: Bring CDs back with $200 off Bose’s Wave music system IV

Sep01
