Few names are as recognizable in the synthesizer market as Moog, a company that’s been helping musicians make futuristic beeps and boops since the 60s. So when the company has a new flagship model hitting shelves, synth fans’ ears will tend to perk up. Moog announced the $1,999 Matriarch, the top-end model of its semi-modular synth lineup, a few months ago. It’s finally begun shipping to customers, already arriving at the doorsteps of some of the folks who’ve pre-ordered. Moog says production is “in full swing.” You can watch the Matriarch in action in the video below, featuring composer Lisa Bella…

An appeals court situated in California, US, today said it’s not illegal to scrape data from public websites without any prior approval. Web scraping refers to the process of collecting large troves of data with the use of web crawlers – scripts designed to lift information from web pages. The ruling comes after a legal dispute between LinkedIn and data analytics firm HiQ. LinkedIn sent a cease-and-desist letter to HiQ, demanding it to stop scraping the site. In response, the data analytics company counter-sued in hopes of blocking LinkedIn from interfering. The company argued that it blocked HiQ from scraping the data to protect…

Popular period tracker apps used by millions of women are sharing sensitive personal information such as monthly timings, contraception use, symptoms, mood, and sexual life to Facebook. Some of the apps, including Maya and MIA Fem: Ovulation Calculator, have millions of downloads on the Google Play Store. They are also available for the iPhone. “The data you share with your menstruation app is probably information you would not share with others,” Privacy Internation noted. The data sharing happens via Facebook’s software development kit (SDK) that gives app creators a full range of tools to develop apps tailored to Android and iOS. Facebook…

How Lush became an ethical champion without bragging about it

Sep10

You see it more and more — businesses labeling themselves as “ethical,” “eco-friendly,” “sustainable,” and “transparent,” but with very little to show for it. It would be great if we lived in a world where all businesses practiced what they preached, and took on sustainable and fair business practices. But these moral high grounds have become a new playground for marketing teams, with little to no oversight into if they are following through on their promises. It’s for this reason that Lush, the UK-based handmade cosmetics company, rejects these labels altogether. TNW recently spoke with Hilary Jones, Lush’s Ethical Director,…
