Xiaomi is out to make smartphone enthusiasts’ jaws drop to the floor with its new Mi Mix Alpha, the concept phone it revealed at an event in China today. The handset has a wraparound screen that practically covers the front and back, save for a strip that houses a 108-megapixel camera. The company said the device has an insane screen to body ratio of 180.6 percent; all of the phone’s antennae are embedded in the top and bottom bezel, and the camera strip. The device has been made from a mix of titanium alloy, sapphire glass, and ceramic. Aerospace-grade titanium…

It’s not just NASA that’s hiring for blockchain professionals. Deutsche Telekom, the German telecom company headquartered in Bonn, has created a specialized blockchain professorship in collaboration with a Berlin-based university. The “professorship for software engineering with a specialization in blockchain” is stationed at CODE University of Applied Sciences. Academic Dr. Peter Ruppel, best known for his work into distributed systems, has taken up the role and commenced teaching yesterday, the first day of the new academic year. Dr. Ruppel’s aim is to further explore distributed ledger tech, and let’s hope he doesn’t go easy. The initiative between Deutsche Telekom and…

Microsoft has issued an emergency out-of-band security update to address two critical vulnerabilities impacting Internet Explorer and Windows Defender. The flaws — indexed as CVE-2019-1367 and CVE-2019-1255 — made it possible for a remote attacker to take control of a target system and trigger a denial of service in Microsoft Defender, the antivirus app that ships with Windows software. Of the two, the former is a zero-day vulnerability in Internet Explorer affecting versions 9, 10, and 11 and is the more severe one. The remote code execution flaw, if exploited successfully, could enable an attacker to gain the same user…

Posted In: Around the Web, India

Hackers with ties to North Korean government have developed a new strain of malware that has been used to record and steal data from cards inserted into ATM machines in India. The banking malware — dubbed ATMDTrack — has been active in the country since late last summer, said Kaspersky Lab researchers in a report published yesterday. Further analysis of the malware samples by the Moscow-based cybersecurity firm found them to be part of a bigger remote access trojan (RAT) called DTrack. Calling it a spy tool to attack financial institutions and research centers in India, the experts said the…
