UK police to auction $662,000 worth of seized Bitcoin — with no minimum bids

UK police are set to auction around $662,000 (£500,000) worth of criminally-seized Bitcoin this week, a reported first for the nation. Announced earlier this month, Irish auction house Wilsons Auctions has set no reserves, and will sell it all to the highest bidder. The firm is managing the auctions on behalf of UK authorities. Police reportedly seized the stash from a criminal who had illegally sold personal data and provided hacking services in exchange for cryptocurrency. Other assets to be auctioned include Ethereum, Ripple (XRP), and other unnamed tokens. Lots ranging from 0.25 to 2 BTC will be sold across two…

According to a job advertisement posted three days ago, NASA is looking for a candidate with a wide range of skills, but notes that “experience with cryptocurrency and blockchain is considered a plus.” Responsibilities will include conceptualizing and developing innovative applications for cross-cutting areas including robotics, AI, cloud computing, and next-generation flight hardware. The chosen individual will join NASA’s team of data scientists and other experts that make up Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Innovation Experience Center (IEC) in California. NASA and blockchain This isn’t the first time NASA makes blockchain-related headlines. Back in January, Hard Fork reported the agency was exploring potential use-cases for blockchain…

Our robot colleague Satoshi Nakaboto writes about Bitcoin every fucking day. Welcome to another edition of Bitcoin Today, where I, Satoshi Nakaboto, tell you what’s been going on with Bitcoin in the past 24 hours. As Aristotle used to say: Time to learn some stuff about Bitcoin! Bitcoin Price We closed the day, September 22 2019, at a price of $10,070. That’s a minor 0.46 percent increase in 24 hours, or $46. It was the highest closing price in one day. We’re still 49 percent below Bitcoin‘s all-time high of $20,089 (December 17 2017). Bitcoin market cap Bitcoin’s market cap…

This leaked video shows Android for feature phones might be in development

Over the years, mass manufacturing of phones has made it possible to get a smartphone for as low as $100. However, these models might not be available in every market. That’s why feature phones with internet connectivity are important for these regions, but there are very few options that are available right now. That might change soon. A hands-on video leaked last week suggests Google might be working on an Android version for feature phones. The video shows Google apps such as Maps, Assistant, and Chrome in action on what looks like a Nokia phone, running a modified version of Android 8.1…

Wait, Facebook had ‘group stories’? Well they’re shutting it down anyway

Sep23

Just nine months after introducing Stories in Facebook Groups, the social media giant is killing off the feature on September 26, at 9AM Pacific Time. The development was first reported by Matt Navara on Friday, which has since been confirmed by Facebook. The feature — called group stories and available since December last year — allowed a group’s administrators and members to post ephmeral photos and videos that vanish within 24 hours. “We’re sunsetting group stories because we want to make sure that features in groups enable people to connect in fun and useful ways, and we’re always looking at ways…
