Boston Dynamics makes 4-legged robot ‘Spot’ available for lease to developers

Boston Dynamics today launched its first commercial robot. Well, sort of. A select list of developers will be given the opportunity to lease one or more of the company’s ‘Spot’ units as part of an ongoing development plan. While that means you can’t purchase your own 4-legged robot to keep as a pet (this thing is not designed to interact with humans in the wild), it also means the era of robot co-workers has truly begun. Unlike traditional automation systems and most industrial robotics, Spot isn’t an autonomous machine. It’s as dumb as a toaster, albeit a toaster that can…

Microsoft is joining Sony on the efforts to combat climate change by switching things up on the console front. In the former’s case, it’s starting a pilot project to make 825,000 Xboxes carbon neutral. As part of the UN’s Playing for the Planet alliance, Microsoft joins several other game companies pledging to do what they can to help climate change. According to the United Nations Environmental Program, the promised changes from these companies could make a big impact: “Combined, these commitments from 21 companies will result in a 30 million tonne reduction of CO2 emissions by 2030, will see millions…

Introducing Pardon the Intrusion, our new cybersecurity newsletter

The theory that underpins computer viruses was first made public in 1949, when computer pioneer John von Neumann presented a paper titled “Theory and Organization of Complicated Automata.” In the paper, von Neumann speculated that computer programs could reproduce themselves — effectively describing the most basic form of a malevolent virus you often hear about now. In the 70 years that have passed since then, viruses have (unfortunately) come a long way. Breaches and hacks are now a dime a dozen, and most of us accept them as a necessary evil of living an online life. Vulnerabilities in software and…

This map connects Russia’s deadly malware to the espionage groups behind them

Notorious threat actors like Potao Express, BlackEnergy and Turla account for as many as 79 unique malware families that have been used to infiltrate European government and military computers and target “high-value” entities across Ukraine, Russia, Georgia, and Belarus for information harvesting. The findings come from a map put together by Check Point Research and genetic malware analysis firm Intezer, making it first-ever comprehensive analysis of state-backed Russian-attributed threat groups that have been found to engage in disruptive, cutting-edge cyber warfare. “The size of the resource investment and the way the Russians are organizing themselves in silos makes them able to carry…
