Quotable

"Any artistic event that is subjectively judged in part by the accompanying music and style, is not a sport. Of course in the Winter Olympics, they overlook that due to the revenues Figure Skating and Ice Dancing generate from all those bored spouses who would otherwise not watch the Games at all." ~ Yasha Harari

The International Cricket Council (ICC), the governing body for the sport, announced today it’s partnering with Facebook to show exclusive digital content for ICC tournaments hosted in the Indian sub-continent until 2023. The social network will also show post-match recaps for ICC events hosted elsewhere in the world. The governing body had partnered with Facebook earlier this year for the 2019 cricket world cup hosted in England. ICC claims people watched 1.2 billion minutes of videos related to the tournament on the platform. While Facebook won’t be able to stream the matches live, it might gain a lot of traction from…

Justin Sun, the founder of blockchain platform TRON, and current CEO of BitTorrent, is appearing a little desperate for the attention of US Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang. Sun reinforced his desire to work with Yang to make Universal Basic Income (UBI) a reality during a livestream on Tuesday, just after promising to reschedule his $4.6 million charity lunch with Warren Buffet “very soon.” Yang’s plans to establish a UBI were first revealed on September 12,, when he announced plans to give away $120,000 through the course of the next year as part of a pilot program for his policy plan.…

Losing your data sucks. It sucks even more when someone uses ransomware to maliciously encrypt your files and demands Bitcoin to ensure its safe return. But don’t worry, because there are things you can do to get one over on the cyberbaddies. Software company Emsisoft has recently released a free decryption tool for prevalent Bitcoin extorting ransomware, called WannaCryFake. According to Emsisoft’s security researchers, WannaCryFake is a strain of the infamous WannaCry ransomware that began spreading around the world back in 2017, infecting big corporations including hospitals, banks, and telecom companies. WannaCryFake is a strain of ransomware that uses AES-256 to encrypt…

Study: Weaponized misinformation from political parties is now a global problem

Social media, a tool created to guard freedom of speech and democracy, has increasingly been used in more sinister ways. From its role in amplifying political disinformation in elections, to inciting online violence, and lowering the levels of trust in media — Facebook isn’t just a space to share “what’s on your mind,” and you’d be naive to believe so.  A study by the Oxford Internet Institute, as first reported by The New York Times, found that since 2017, organized social media manipulation has more than doubled with at least 70 countries known to be using online propaganda to manipulate mass…

Google is making its Android Go — a lightweight alternative of its mobile platform design to run smoothly on low-end phones — even faster. In a new blog post, the company says apps on Android 10 Go will now launch about 10 percent faster than they did on the older version. This improvement in speed has also made it possible for Google to include a new form of encryption for Go users without compromising overall performance. The Big G also boasts a series of new features for its lineup of Go apps. Google Go, for instance, will sport a new AI-powered read-out-out…
