GitHub launches Security Lab to spot vulnerabilities in open-source code

GitHub has officially launched a new Security Lab with an aim to secure open-source software. The objective is to “bring together security researchers, maintainers, and companies across the industry who share our belief that the security of open source is important for everyone,” the Microsoft-owned code repository platform said. To that effect, the company is making CodeQL freely available for anyone to find vulnerabilities in open-source code. It’s also launching GitHub Advisory Database, a public database of security advisories created on GitHub. CodeQL, the sematic code analysis tool used to spot exploits in codebases, comes from its acquisition of Semmle back…

Safari gets support for hardware security keys with iOS 13.3

Apple yesterday released iOS 13.3 beta to developers and public beta testers. But it comes with a new nifty feature that allows Safari users to use hardware security keys for two-factor authentication. According to the release notes: [Safari] now supports NFC, USB, and Lightning FIDO2-compliant security keys in Safari, SFSafariViewController, and ASWebAuthenticationSession using the WebAuthn standard, on devices with the necessary hardware capabilities. Security keys improve account security because they are designed with an intent to cryptographically verify an individual’s identity when signing in to an online service, thereby defending users against account takeover attacks.
