Can AI be hypnotized?

It’s no longer considered science fiction fodder to imagine a human-level machine intelligence in our lifetimes. Year after year we see the status quo in AI research shattered as yesterday’s algorithms bear way to today’s systems. One day, perhaps within a matter of decades, we might build machines with artificial neural networks that imitate our brains in every meaningful way. And when that happens, it’ll be important to make sure they’re not as easy to hack as we are. Robo-hypno-tism? The Holy Grail of AI is human-level intelligence. Modern AI might seem pretty smart given all the hyperbolic headlines you…

First impressions: Gary Grigsby’s War in the East 2 improves upon a masterpiece

The first name in hardcore digital wargaming is back with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East 2. I managed to get my hands on an early copy, so let’s dive in! I’ve only spent a few hours with the sequel to the legendary strategy game that set the bar for historical accuracy and detail, but I can already tell you: our patience has been rewarded. Gary Grigsby’s War in the East 2 (we’ll just call it East 2 going forward) comes more than a decade after the launch of the original. That might seem like an inflated development period, but we’re…

Humans aspired to colonize the Moon for centuries, but the celestial body has an extremely hostile environment. The safest locations for settlers could be under the Moon’s surface. The European Space Agency (ESA) believes lunar caves could provide shelter from radiation, micrometeorites, and extreme temperatures — and perhaps even access to water ice deposits. The agency is currently testing an autonomous robot that it hopes will offer new insights into conditions in the caverns. [Read: How to use AI to better serve your customers] Named DAEDALUS, the 46-cm sphere would be lowered into a cave’s mouth from a long tether and…
