Researchers at the University Of Newcastle have announced they’ve managed to 3D print corneas – the outermost part of the human eye. This is incredible, life-changing news for a lot of folks. Worldwide, 10 million people require surgery to prevent corneal blindness from diseases like trachoma. On top of this, almost 5 million are completely blind due to corneal scarring from accidents or illnesses. This high-tech method of producing corneas could end all that. It works by taking stem cells from a health donor’s cornea and mixing it together with a gel, creating what researchers have deemed “bio-ink.” “Our unique…

Light-sheet fluorescence microscopy is an exciting new imaging method that harnesses thin sheets of light to make images of large biological samples such as fly and fish embryos, mice and even pieces of human tissue. And its use could lead to less intrusive and more effective diagnosis for patients. At the University of St Andrews, we have recently utilized the unusual properties of shaped laser beams to get a clearer image deeper inside specimens – using beams that bend and curve around corners and get brighter, rather than dimmer, as they travel. In contrast, if you hold a finger briefly…

Posted In: Around the Web, Events, Insider

The United Nation’s sustainability development goals can be met with the help of technology developed for outer space. This is what Danielle Wood, founder of Space Enabled at MIT Media Lab, explained at TNW Conference last week. Speaking about her work, she said: “We ask how tech from space encourages sustainability on Earth for everyone.” It’s mostly about satellites and how their capabilities let us better understand our planet, but Wood explains how we can move beyond current implementation to meet goals in the future. Satellites and sustainability There are 17 global goals of sustainability, and satellites play a large part…
