Drones are out here saving whales

The way drones are used rapidly veers between the uplifting (humanitarian aid!) and the downright depressing (air strikes!). Luckily though, this story is in the former camp. The folks over at – deep breath here – the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary (wow) and Oceans Unmanned (that’s better), are using drones to help save whales. Great news. Unless you’re Icelandic, maybe. Deeply involved in this project is Ed Lyman, the man with the world’s best job title: Large Whale Entanglement Response Coordinator. He fulfils this role for NOAA and has been working in this field for…

Ultra-pricey cable manufacturer Monster is doing an ICO. Seriously

Monster Cable is looking to surf the blockchain buzz to save its drowning business. The US-based electronics manufacturer — best known for its headphones and (overpriced) audio and video cables — has been suffering heavy losses for years. Now, it’s planning a $300 million initial coin offering (ICO). The company has filed the ICO for “Monster Money Tokens (MMNY)” with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), as spotted by Coindesk. Monster is not promising any groundbreaking innovations with its ICO though — no building robots or buying comets with blockchain. It’s simply creating an e-commerce platform where you could…

Developers can now upload apps to the Github Marketplace for free

GitHub launched the GitHub Marketplace last year. A developer-focused app store felt like a supremely weird turn from GitHub, but it’s managed to turn it into a roaring success, attracting products from the likes of Travis CI and ZenHub. Now, the company is celebrating its first anniversary by opening the marketplace to even more developers. GitHub is allowing anyone with a free product to list their app on the marketplace without having to pay for the pleasure. The GitHub Marketplace currently boasts 100,000 users, and contains 50 different tools, all designed to help developers improve their workflow. Opening the playing…

This misanthropic artist taught Google Home to fire a gun

With a misspent childhood/adolescence/adulthood absorbing as much sci-fi as possible, I knew it was only a matter of time until smart speakers turned bad. Well, okay, maybe that’s not entirely accurate. But, AI artist and roboticist Alexander Reben did teach Google Assistant on a Google Home to fire a gun, so that’s something. Check out the lo-fi set-up here: It’s a clever and timely piece of artwork that plays on people’s fears of both the (probably) impending singularity and guns in general. On one level, it’s reminiscent of the work some artists did around 3D-printed guns. The most notorious of this…
