"Venezuelan Dictator Hugo Chavez went off the air after being hospitalized in Cuba. Apparently he and Fidel Castro disagreed over what costumes to wear for their next joint rant, or on whose twitter account to distribute their vastly important messages about how great they are." ~ Yasha Harari

USB-C is fantastic. As the one-connector-to-rule-them-all, it’s the closest thing to a universal connector tech has seen, able to power everything from earbuds, to phones, to laptops. But despite its increasing ubiquitousness, there are limits to its utility. USB-C Power Delivery has been capped at 100W for a while now, for instance; while that’s enough for most devices, some powerful laptops are still forced to use traditional power connectors that can handle higher wattages. Now that concession may soon be a thing of the past. As reported by Android Central, the latest revision to the USB-C cable and connector specification…

Huawei’s ‘replacement’ for Android will launch June 2, but does it stand a chance?

Trump’s ban on Huawei was arguably the biggest single blow to the smartphone ecosystem in recent years, crippling the company’s prospects in western markets where access to Google services is essential for Android users. Since then, Huawei has been focusing on building its own mobile OS, and we now know it is set to arrive soon: Huawei announced that HarmonyOS — known as Hongmeng in China — will launch on June 2. HarmonyOS has technically been around as an OS for the internet-of-things for a while, but Huawei has been devoting its resources towards making it more of a full-fledged…

New experiment: Clocks consuming more energy are more accurate… ’cause thermodynamics

May23

Clocks pervade our lives, from the cellular clocks inside our bodies to the atomic clocks that underlie satellite navigation. These atomic clocks can measure time accurately to within one second in billions of years. But there could be a price to pay for this accuracy, in the form of energy. Our new experiment found clocks that measure time more accurately consume more energy than their less accurate counterparts. This suggests nature imposes a fundamental energy cost for keeping time, and it may mean there’s a limit to how accurate we can make clocks. The branch of science that studies the…

Review with measurements: Polk’s Reserve R200 is budget hi-fi greatness

Polk Audio, the American speaker company known for making hi-fi speakers at non-absurd prices, announced the Reserve series back in March. Shortly thereafter reviews flooded the web singing the speakers’ praises, particularly their bang for your buck. Naturally, I had to get my hands on a pair myself to see what all the hype was about — and put the speaker through the test bench. I chose the Reserve R200, the $700/pair bookshelf model with a 6.5-inch woofer. While $700 may not sound all that cheap to people who aren’t into speakers, it’s basically a budget speaker when you consider…
