Netflix is definitely not getting into gaming (but define ‘gaming’)

Minecraft: Story Mode is coming to Netflix. Later this year, subscribers to the streaming service will be able to explore the world unveiled by Telltale back in 2015 from the comfort of their couch, using only their remote control. This is the latest in a line of interactive titles available on Netflix, including Stretch Armstrong: The Breakout, Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale, and Buddy Thunderstruck: The Maybe Pile. Bringing a beloved Telltale title to the small screen is a bold move, and has raised questions about whether the streaming service intends to embark upon a broader push…

This Dutch town uses high-tech streetlights to keep their bats happy

Have you ever heard of a bat-friendly city? Me neither. But the Dutch town of Zuidhoek-Nieuwkoop is claiming to be the first – and probably only – bat-friendly town in the world. The town is home to many rare and vulnerable plant and animal species, among them a number of rare bat-species. And apparently, bats, although being blind, are bothered by streetlights. The light that’s emitted from typical streetlights disturbs bats’ internal sensors and rhythms and affects their feeding patterns, inner compass, and general nocturnal behavior. Bats typically feed on a variety of insects, and these tend to swarm around…

Instagram no longer snitches when you screenshot Stories

You can go back to recklessly screenshotting your friends’ embarrassing Stories. Several months after Instagram introduced a feature to notify users anytime someone has screengrabbed their Story, the Facebook subsidiary has revealed the functionality is no longer in effect. Instagram has stopped sending screenshot notifications to Story posters, the company told BuzzFeed News yesterday. TNW has since confirmed the change is already in place. While taking a screenshot would previously result in showing a star-shaped icon next to the handle of the person who did the screengrabbing, the field now remains entirely empty. Check out the difference below: It is worth pointing…

Is the Earth doomed? The Ocean Cleanup’s CEO has the answers

Jun15

What inspired you to start The Ocean Cleanup? Besides for The Ocean Cleanup, what other projects in the field are you excited about? What can we do in our everyday to help the planet? Ask all this and more to Ocean Cleanup Project’s Boyan Slat. Boyan Slat is the founder and CEO of The Ocean Cleanup, a foundation that develops advanced systems to rid oceans of plastic around the world. He studied Aerospace Engineering at TU Delft before dropping out in 2013. Boyan then developed a system that harnesses the ocean currents to concentrate plastics, reducing the time it would…
