The Pentagon yesterday announced it was scuttling its long-doomed “Project JEDI,” a cloud-services AI contract that was awarded to Microsoft in 2019. Up front: Project JEDI is a big deal. The US military needs a reliable cloud-service platform from which to operate its massive AI infrastructure. Unfortunately the project was mishandled from the very beginning. Now, two years later, the Pentagon‘s calling for a reboot: Today, the Department of Defense (DoD) canceled the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) Cloud solicitation and initiated contract termination procedures. The Department has determined that, due to evolving requirements, increased cloud conversancy, and industry advances,…

The teenage joy of late-night gaming sessions faces an uncertain future in China. Tech giant Tencent has launched a time-sensitive facial recognition system that prevents minors from binging on video games after dark. The platform, called “Midnight Patrol,” arrives amid a moral panic over gaming addiction among children in China. Under-18s are now barred from gaming between 10PM and 8AM, and must register for games using their real names and government ID numbers. Tencent‘s system uses a facial verification system connected to a public identity database to detect minors posing as adults during the curfew. “We will conduct a face screening for accounts registered with…

TLDR: These six course bundles explore new career skills worth considering from graphic design and machine learning to music production at beyond, each for just $20 right now. World economies are revving back up, but the interesting point is that many of the world’s workers are taking a different view of whether getting back to normal is a good thing. For many, a collection of low wage jobs with few benefits and little upward mobility aren’t working anymore.  If you feel like it’s time to launch a new way of life, regardless of your new direction, it’s probably worth taking…
