It seems that the American venture capital (VC) firm Andreessen Horowitz —known for its successful Silicon Valley investments — is ready to foray deeper into the cryptocurrency space. The firm announced a $300 million cryptocurrency fund in a blog post on Monday. The fund named “a16zcrypto” will be co-led by general partners Chris Dixon and Katie Haun. Andreessen Horowitz is interested in holding long-term investments in cryptocurrencies, Dixon suggests. The firm hasn’t sold any of its cryptocurrency holdings so far, and doesn’t plan to — in the near future — either. The VC firm believes that the value of cryptocurrencies is driven…

Wi-Fi’s getting a crucial WPA3 security upgrade, starting today

If you’re in the market for a new Wi-Fi router, you’ll want to get one that supports WPA3, the latest security protocol for networking devices. After more than a decade of using the same security standards, more than 500,000 consumer-grade routers around the world were breached last year by hackers using the nefarious VPNFilter malware that originated from Russia. The Wi-Fi Alliance, a group of companies certifying devices capable of data transmission over Wi-Fi, has now updated the commonly implemented security protocol for Wi-Fi enabled devices. It’s also starting to certify products that support WPA3. Devices with the upgraded WPA3 will…

Posted In: Around the Web, cryptocurrency

In 2017, Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) netted a collective $5.6 billion, becoming one of the hottest tech trends of the year. Also referred to as token sale, ICO is a method for companies to raise funds by selling their own proprietary cryptocurrencies on the blockchain. In many cases, blockchain startups managed to raise millions of dollars by introducing nothing more than a conceptual whitepaper, a flashy website, a promo video and a team of veteran engineers. However, this wasn’t without troubles and controversies, especially as the crypto industry is still highly unregulated. A considerable number of blockchain projects died and…

OpenAI’s Dota 2 bots will take on a pro team at The International

OpenAI, an artificial intelligence research firm that’s funded by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, is set to unleash its specially trained bots on professional Dota 2 players next month, to see if they can beat the best in the business at their own game. It’s not the first that OpenAI’s neural networks will face off against skilled Dota veterans: it’s previously defeated top players in one-on-one competitions in the immensely popular MOBA game, and has recently been victorious in matches against amateur teams, while playing with certain restrictions. One might argue that the OpenAI Five (the clutch of neural networks that…
