Nvidia is reportedly preparing to launch its much-anticipated next generation graphics cards this fall, with partners set to receive developer boards next month. The broad strokes: According to a report from Wccftech, Nvidia will ship its next generation graphics cards to GeForce add-in-board partners in early August. Why this matters: Once the company’s secret cards are sent out to developers around the world, there’s no stopping leaks. It’s likely the cards will be formally announced beforehand. Most journalists and tech experts are predicting the cards will be called the “GeForce GTX 1100 series,” and it’s been confirmed that they’re being…

Getting more women into the industry is talk of the town, and it seems cryptocurrency businesses are using it to fuel their advertising. “BuyUcoin, an Indian cryptocurrency exchange, has found that female Indian investors, on average, invested over [140,000 Indian Rupees] (around $2,000) on digital currencies—twice the amount that men typically spent. The survey, conducted between March and June, had over 60,000 respondents,” Quartz reports. But it seems that there are several shortcomings of the survey that puts a doubt on both these findings and the conclusion reported by BuyUcoin. The difference between the average money invested by the two…

In a move that inspires one to cry out “blockchainify everything,” the UK’s Food Standards Agency has announced that it’s recent blockchain-focused pilot programme proved a success. This marks the first time the country has used distributed ledger tech to regulate compliance within the local food sector. Starting small, the pilot saw a slaughterhouse for beef share data on the food supply chain with the FSA, transparently providing data on all food processed at the facility. The next step of the pilot will include letting farmers record data about individual animals onto the blockchain, scheduled for next month. If it…

An AI system has wiped the floor with some of China’s top doctors when it comes to diagnosing brain tumors and predicting hematoma expansion. As reported by Xinhua, the system defeated a team comprised of 15 of China’s top doctors by a margin of two to one. The AI, BioMind, was developed by the Artificial Intelligence Research Centre for Neurological Disorders at Beijing Tiantan Hospital, and is another example of the long line of the technology analyzing images. When diagnosing brain tumors, BioMind was correct 87 percent of the time, compared to 66 percent by the medical professionals. The AI also only…

Chinese firm claims its laser rifle burns clothes and skin up to 800 meters away

A Chinese firm wants to arm the country’s police forces with a whole new kind of weapon for the battlefield: an assault rifle that fires lasers and can burn your clothes and skin from up to 800m away. Oh, and those lasers are silent, invisible, and can pass through glass windows too. The rifle (not pictured above, that’s just a concept illustration) has been developed by ZKZM Laser, which is part of the Xi’an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The idea is to support police in hostage situations, allowing them to take kidnappers…
