Scientists are slaughtering radio-tracked hornets to save the bees

Bees and other pollinators are pretty important to, you know, life as we know it. Unfortunately, things aren’t always rosy for our buzzing friends. Aside from habitat loss, parasites, and pesticides, they also have to deal with a burgeoning population of bee-eating Asian hornets. But humanity might’ve found a solution: radio-tracking. In a world first, scientists from the University of Exeter have attached tiny little tracking tags to Asian hornets, allowing them to follow the creatures back to their hives and, uh, mercilessly crush them. The technology was tested in the south of France and Jersey, where there are already established…

It seems that Indian Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the central bank’s directive against cryptocurrency businesses is taking its toll already. Zebpay is disabling the deposit and withdrawal options for Indian Rupee from its platform, the company announced today. Dear User, Today we are disabling the rupee deposit and withdrawal options on the Zebpay app. This is being done in light of the bank account closures as per the RBI guideline. The Supreme Court of India has shut down appeals for a temporary stay on a ruling that would force financial institutions to cease all cryptocurrency related operations, declared in April. The move sees any entity regulated by the Royal Bank of India (RBI) be prohibited from engaging in all services related to cryptocurrencies – such as the buying and selling of virtual currencies. Facilitating transfers of virtual coins is also to be included in the restrictions, as reported by Times of India. The news confirms the fate of cryptocurrency businesses across the country for the foreseeable future: that within just…

AI can now ‘listen’ to machines to tell if they’re breaking down

Sound is everywhere, even when you can’t hear it. It is this noiseless sound, though, that says a lot about how machines function.  Helsinki-based Noiseless Acoustics and Amsterdam-based OneWatt are relying on artificial intelligence (AI) to better understand the sound patterns of troubled machines. Through AI they are enabling faster and easier problem detection. Both companies were also finalists in last year’s New Energy Challenge, an initiative by Shell, YES!Delft, and Rockstart that looks at innovative technologies and solutions within European and Israeli startups for the energy transition. Following last year’s success, a 2018 edition of the challenge was just launched.…
