I think it’s fair to say that few of us have made decisions we didn’t later come to regret. But personally, I can proudly say that inserting a USB cable into my urethra was never one of them. An unnamed (thankfully for him) 13-year-old from China’s Heilongjiang province was hospitalized after cutting off the end of a USB cable, and inserting approximately 10 centimeters of what remained into his urethra. According to Singapore’s Straits Times, the boy did it all “out of curiosity,” which is, presumably, the Chinese version of YOLO. Unfortunately for the boy, the cable knotted while inside the…

Yes, you’re losing Twitter followers. No, it’s not because you’re an asshole (probably).

Twitter today announced it’d be removing locked accounts from users’ follower counts. If you’ve noticed a precipitous drop in follower counts today, it’s not you — it’s your followers. Reports surfaced earlier this week that Twitter had suspended a multitude of fake accounts in the months of May and June — apparently in an attempt to curb the rise of bot and their accompanying cocktail of issues. The number of accounts targeted is reportedly around 70 million. To be clear, locked accounts aren’t bot accounts necessarily — at one point, they were created and operated by a real person. Accounts on Twitter are…

In the wake of former presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s decision to run for Senate in Utah, the state’s online voter registration database has suffered more than one billion hacking attempts per day. You didn’t read that wrong. According to Utah state elections director Justin Lee, the one billion attempts per day – that’s more than 12,000 per second – are the result of increased scrutiny on the state’s elections since Mitt Romney announced he’d run for US Senate in Utah, and subsequently beat out state Representative Mike Kennedy for the Republican nod. There isn’t much information on the exact nature…
