Quotable

"U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said publicly that the United States would not intervene in Syria, because the American Congress views second generation Syrian dictator Bashar Assad as a reformer. Is that because his live ammunition is reformed, or because his state sponsorship of terrorism and repressive abuse of human rights and free speech are so humanitarian?" ~ Yasha Harari

Machine learning generates insights into worldwide terrorist attacks

A team of researchers has used machine learning to predict and explain terrorist attacks. Their tests suggest the models can accurately predict attacks in regions that are already affected by terrorism. However, they found that “black swan events,” which occur sporadically, are almost impossible to predict. The researchers, led by Dr Andre Python from Zhejiang University in China, used publicly available data to analyze the location and data of attacks that occurred between 2002 and 2016 in 13 regions of the world. “We define terrorism as politically motivated attacks outside legitimate warfare (i.e., targeting noncombatants) perpetrated by non-state actors to communicate to a wider audience,” the group…

Microsoft is finally making the OneNote to rule them all

As someone who’s been on tablets PCs since before the Surface line even popularized 2-in-1s, I’m something of a religious stylus user. I wrote many of my college notes on Microsoft’s OneNote, but in the last few years, the app has lived in a rather frustrating dichotomy. You had ‘OneNote for Windows 10,’ built on the more modern UWP code and available right from the Windows Store, and then you had OneNote, the classic version of the app distributed through Microsoft Office. In my experience, the former has tended to be more responsive, while the latter had way more features built-in…

I tried vertical tabs in Microsoft Edge, and now I can’t go back to Chrome

There are two kinds of people in the world: those who keep their tabs neat and tidy and those who drown in an endless sea of microscopic slivers atop their browser. Actually, scratch that. I don’t think I’ve ever met someone who keeps their tabs tidy. I certainly don’t. Oh, I’ve tried. Over the years I’ve various tab grouping methods. I’ve tried double-layer horizontal tabs. I’ve tried various extensions that allow you to quickly search for and close tabs. I’ve even given vertical tabs, the subject of this post, a try in various iterations before. But inevitably I’ve always masochistically reverted…
