The internet has become information chaos

Jul17

A simple search on Google or a scroll through Facebook will reveal hundreds of contrasting posts and articles about any subject imaginable. The internet has become cluttered with too many opinions and an overload of information. People need an easy way to stay up to date on the subjects that matter most to them without becoming bogged down in fake news, misinformation and wildly contrasting opinions. The internet used to be a powerful tool for connecting people and allowing access to any topic imaginable. Now it is an endless quagmire that leaves people confused and unsure of what is real…

This visualization of Venmo’s public data is terrifying

Jul17

PayPal’s peer-to-peer payment app, Venmo, is one of the modern world’s greatest conveniences. It’s a simple way to send people money without jumping through a bunch of hoops. But, what if you found out that every transaction you completed with the app was, by default, instantly uploaded to the internet for the entire world to see? You’d be upset right? Well, as it turns out, if you never changed the privacy settings in your Venmo account you’re sharing your transaction history with everyone. Mozilla fellow and data expert Hang Do Thi Duc today posted a blog entry detailing her project…

Child suicides prompt game bans in Saudi Arabia

Jul17

The Saudi Arabian Commission announced earlier this week it would be blocking almost fifty games following the suicides of two children. Supposedly, the two children, a 12- and 13-year-old, took their own lives after the playing the Blue Whale social media game. Shrouded in unreliable information, this game apparently involves taking increasingly awful orders from an “administrator” via social media, the final command being to take your own life. A Russian man confessed to inventing it last year, and has since been arrested for inciting suicide. When the story Associated Press first broke the story, it named games like as Witcher 3, Grand Theft…

Google Assistant’s new visual overlay answers questions before you ask

Jul17

Google is rolling out a new visual overlay for Assistant that provides a snapshot of your day. It’ll proactively feed you information relevant to your schedule, location, habits, and more. It’s like a personal search engine that answers questions before you ask them. Back in May, at its I/O conference, Google previewed a number of upcoming features for its AI-powered personal assistant. You may not have heard about the visual overlay update, it kind of got lost in the wake of the announcement John Legend was lending his voice to Assistant and the jaw-dropping Duplex demo. But, despite the sexy…

Apple’s emojified execs sure look awful as humans

Jul17

Today’s World Emoji Day. To celebrate this stupid holiday I turned Apple’s executive staff – who had some poor corporate artist turn them into emoji – back into humans. Why? Maybe to protest the both the creation of idiotic holidays and the subsequent corporate takeover of said events. Or maybe because it allows TNW to profit from the attention bonanza while still maintaining an air of subversiveness (I seeee you Motherboard and Splinter). Maybe I was bored? I don’t know, but it sure felt good. BEFORE: EMOJI: AFTER: Yes, I used the free version of Morph Age
