Why are people with nothing to hide so scared of Clearview AI’s facial recognition?

The Australian government gave Clearview AI the boot earlier this week after determining the company had no right to scrape and maintain its citizens’ data. If you or anyone else has ever uploaded a picture with your face in it to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or just about any website, there’s a very good chance you’re in Clearview AI‘s database. What does that mean? Clearview AI employees, millions of law enforcement agents, and anyone with access to the company’s data (which was recently exposed in a massive breach) can identify you as easily as snapping a photo with a smartphone or…

Review: Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite (2021) is even better than the Oasis

The 2021 Kindle Paperwhite is simply the best ereader for the majority of people who actually want an ereader. It improves on its predecessors in the places it matters most, and starting at $140, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better combination of features and quality. Perhaps more importantly, it might be the first Kindle Paperwhite really worth upgrading to in years — and I’d argue it’s a better choice than the fancier Oasis too. The screen is bigger The new Kindle Paperwhite is the same size as its predecessor, but now comes with a 6.8-inch screen instead of a…

There’s something fishy about Facebook’s pivot on facial recognition

Nov02
by Sindy Cator on November 2, 2021 at 7:58 pm
Posted In: artificial intelligence

Meta today announced updates to its facial recognition program that will have sweeping consequences for the Facebook platform — and not in a good way. Meta? It’s still Facebook to me and this move just proves that a dumpster fire by any other name would still smell as sickly. The company’s not stopping the use of facial recognition. Nor is it deleting facial recognition data for more than a billion users. It’s deleting some very specific facial recognition templates — those used to automatically tag people in photos on Facebook. There’s nothing in the announcement today that would indicate it’s actually…
