SEC should keep rejecting all Bitcoin ETF proposals — at least for now

The cryptocurrency industry seems keen on exchange traded funds (ETFs) as the next big milestone to see increased mainstream trading for the digital assets. Indeed, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has received a host of ETF proposals from different companies over the years. Unfortunately, the agency doesn’t seem convinced that cryptocurrencies are ready for ETFs yet. The Winklevoss twins were the first to file a Bitcoin ETF proposal with the SEC back in 2013. The agency took its sweet time to make a decision, but finally rejected the proposal four years later. A second proposal from the Winlevoss…

The world’s first public bond entirely managed via blockchain has been priced and is awaiting settlement. It’s part of a $73 million test of distributed ledger tech (DLT), mandated by the World Bank. The new blockchain-powered financial instrument was only announced a fortnight ago, when it was nicknamed the “bond-i” bond. Investors were able to purchase it directly from the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), with a promised return of 2.251 percent over a two year period. “CBA was mandated by the World Bank as arranger for the bond on August 10 and following a two-week consultation period with the market, the two-year…

I played the new Pokemon game and I’m ready to fucking go

If you don’t like Pokémon then I’m so sorry for whatever happened to you. I, on the other hand, have enough exuberance left in me that I’m genuinely excited for the upcoming launch of the new Pokémon games, Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!  And you know what? I was lucky enough to play the game at Gamescom ahead of its Nintendo Switch release on November 16. I’m ready to fucking go. Eww, Pokémon? Quiet yourself. For a generation of gamers, playing Pokémon Blue, Red, Yellow, Silver or Gold was a formative experience. In fact, it can be hard to remember just how huge the franchise was when it first came…

UK government’s blockchain plans sound a lot like ‘1984’

Despite everything else that might be going on inside parliament, the British Government are still keen to explore new opportunities for keeping tabs on its citizens – this time using blockchain and distributed ledgers. In a recent update from the HM Courts and Tribunal Service, Balaji Anbil, Head of Digital Architecture and Cyber Security at the Ministry of Justice, discusses how the British Government is exploring blockchain and distributed ledgers to provide “novel solutions to traditional challenges.” Which to me, sounds like official Government speak for, “everyone else is looking into blockchain, so we should be too.” Anbil’s post provides…

Mt. Gox preps to return $1B in stolen cryptocurrency to victims

The floodgates have opened for victims of the long-running Mt. Gox saga, which involves over a billion dollars in lost cryptocurrency. Almost five years later, claims can finally be made to have the stolen money returned. A press release has been posted on the Mt. Gox website, along with an online tool for submitting claims. If online is not suitable, they can be made via post. It should be noted that this process is strictly for individuals – claims for corporate creditors will have to be filed at a later date. As with the bankruptcy proceedings, the Rehabilitation Trustee has…
