Olympics Committee President rejects esports as ‘promoting violence’

Were you, like me, curious to see if esports would make it as far as the Olympics? It seemed like it was at least possible — everyone appeared to be pretty receptive. But this weekend, at least one major Olympics official expressed their dislike of the idea, which may be enough to put a stop to that idea. This week, esports made its debut at the Asian Games, the largest multisports event in the world behind the Olympics. While it was strictly a demonstration sport, it was the first time esports had made it that far into the world of…

Monoprice’s MP80 are $80 earbuds with tweakable sound well beyond their price class

There’s never been a better time to buy a pair of earbuds. It’s also never been more confusing. In the past few years, there has been an explosion of choice among in-ear-monitors (IEMs). It used to be that the only decent options came were expensive models from a handful of reputable audio companies, but nowadays you’ll find dozens of bang-for-your-buck options from a myriad of young brands. Spend some time in audiophile forum Head-Fi, and you’ll find an overwhelming number of hidden gems, largely imported models from Asia (‘Chi-Fi’ is a common term for cheap-but-good models from China). I’m just…

Investigators haven’t ruled out sabotage in mysterious space station leak

Russian space chief Dmitry Rogozin yesterday said a leak found aboard a vehicle docked with the International Space Station (ISS) last week was almost certainly caused by a person with a drill. Investigators are now scrambling to determine whether the sabotage occurred while the vehicle was in space. News broke Monday that the damage to the vehicle, a Russian-made Soyuz spacecraft, wasn’t the result of a meteorite strike as previously believed. According to Russian news agency TASS, Rogozin said: We are considering all the theories. The one about a meteorite impact has been rejected because the spaceship’s hull was evidently…

Mixmax Rules is like IFTTT for email

Sep04

Posted In: Around the Web, Design & Dev

Many of us live in our inboxes, spending hours composing and forwarding emails, and using the information contained within in other contexts and services, like Slack and Trello. Mixmax hopes to make that last bit easier with Mixmax Rules. This is a user-programmable system that lets you connect the data held within the vaults of your email account with other popular external services. So, for example, you could program Mixmax Rules to send you an SMS when a condition is met — like when a pre-defined person sends you an email. It uses the same “if this then that” logic…
