US military thinks soldiers are ready to control machines with their minds

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), a think tank for the Pentagon, hosted a three day symposium in celebration of its 60th anniversary this week. Highlights from the event included discussion of some of the most astounding projects the agency is currently working on. And of those, one in particular caught our eye: The N3, or Next Generation Nonsurgical Neurotechnology, program. We love DARPA because its job is to come up with wacky futuristic ideas and then see which ones the brass wants to pursue. And the N3 program is everything you hope for in a (not at all)…

An urgent and extraordinary meeting of Switzerland’s Crypto Valley Association (CVA) has been called in order to fight gender inequality. Two women are to be appointed to the board, following accusations it’s become a “boys club.” “We want to create a space that works for everyone rather than just carry on with the same old boys’ club and their cronies,” declared Leeannee Abapo Senn, CVA communications chief. “Our objective is to elevate the dynamic women who have contributed to Crypto Valley and to create a stronger, more inclusive ecosystem.” It’s been reported that 43 nominations for female candidates were received. A…

Tencent teams with Chinese government to choke kids’ game time

Remember last week when we found out China was going to be putting the squeeze on game companies in an effort to combat childhood shortsightedness? And we didn’t know exactly how that’d look because the Ministry of Education were frustratingly vague? Well now we know exactly how it’s going to save its kids eyes: By forcibly limiting their play time. When it first revealed its initiative, the Ministry said it would be “adopting measures to limit the use time of minors” in video games, in addition to limiting the number of games overall. Now it appears Chinese-based company Tencent is…

Microsoft to reveal its next Surface devices on October 2

It’s that time of year again: Microsoft is ready to announce new devices. The company just sent out press invites for an event on October 2, taking place in New York. Going by the company’s history, that means we should expect updates to the Surface line. That said, don’t expect that mythical Surface Phone; TNW has learned such a device won’t be announced at this event. Current rumors suggest that device is being significantly reworked, and it’s likely we won’t see if for some time, if ever. More likely candidates are updates to the Surface Pro, Laptop and/or Surface Studio. The Surface…
